I had heard of this dude prior to saturday but never have seen him fight. i was live at the fight on saturday in sunrise(ft lauderdale , fl) and saw him close up in person. he took that rough knockdown in the 2nd but came back super strong. he proved me wrong and in my eyes deserved to atleast get a draw in the fight. just seeing him breakdown in the corner(the cameras only caught a piece of that) was really sad. he said in an interview a few min later that he just wanted to be the best boxer he can and come here for the first time in the us and win and be an ode to all the great boxers he watched growing up. he never once said he deserved the fight. he never once complained but you could tell he was truly hurt. i wish him much luck in his next few battles and hope he makes a name for himself. he is also freakishly big in person for 135. yeeesh. i also got his autograph after teh fight which i thought was very classy. he didnt deny anyone who asked him. I wouldnt say he proved me wrong as i didnt know enough about him before the fight to have had much of an opinion. I will say this however, the bloke seems like he is all class. When Nate didnt make weight, Funeka didnt complain, didnt ask for any of Nates purse as compensation, and just did his job like nothing was different. He survived 2 KD's and fought very well and proved that he is a flawed but skilled fighter with tremendous heart and desire to go on. Hopefully he goes on to learn from the fight and gets more oppurtunites down the road to showcase himself on a world class level because he proved with his effort he is a world class fighter.
i didnt think he'd go the distance, but he did and i thought he barely won on my card. so i'm on board and i wish him well. he's a good fighter and obviously put everything he had into this fight.
i would love to see this guy again.. And i assume that he will got a shot for one of nate's vacant titles, he definitly deserves that. Funeka vs Julio Diaz, Casamayor, Valero and Katsidis will all be pretty even and exciting matchups imo.
i think he could knock out valero and katsidis and it wouldnt surprise me if he was too much for casa right now.
A star was born on Sat. night and his name is Ali Funeka. Looking forward very much to see him in the U.S. on TV again soon. Excellent fighter, great story, created emotional attachment, forced a top fighter like Nate Campbell to show his best, bring back FUNEKA
Well, as someone else stated, I did not have much of an opinion for him as I had not watched him fight before except for a clip of him in youtube. He proved to me that he is a world class fighter by getting up from two knock downs and making the man at 135lb work for his win. The fight was close and could have gone either way. Furthermore, I liked the way Ali would fight in a defensive style and yet still keep busy the whole fight. He also moves very well for a big guy and listens to his corner, which is important. I felt very bad for him at the end of the fight and I look forward for him to get another crack at a title belt soon because he deserves it!
He very well may have won on points, but your odds arent good coming to the US for the first time, fighting a champ, and getting knocked down twice. Let's not act like he swept the cards here. I could see a draw, but he wasnt walking into Florida and taking the belts home after getting knocked down twice. That being said I do want to see Funeka fight again. He showed a ton of ability, heart and desire. I saw a lot of Holyfield type traits in the young guy. Hats off to Nate for those nasty body shots too. I wish him well at 140.
