Even though I like this petition and hope many people sign for it, some of the information provided there is invalid. Khan fought at 147, sure he didn't make the full 147 limit but anything above 140 is considered Welterweight.

The fight with Diaz was at 142, anything above the 140 limit all the way to 147 is officially considered a Welterweight fight.

I'd have to ask, what dangerous fights did Floyd Mayweather avoid?

I would argue that he tried to fight the very best as his first option and when that wasn't possible he fought with his wallet in mind.

After all, he tried to get a fight with Shane Mosley in 1999 and 2006. Shane declined twice. In 1999 he declined because Shane wanted De la Hoya. Fair enough. He got the fight and beat Oscar legitimately and then became mainstream. In 2006, the Vargas years; Shane claimed he wanted a vacation after the 2nd fight where he KO'd Fernando Vargas. Back then Shane still had the upper hand and was still the bigger draw.

Acelino Freitas wanted no part of Floyd after the Corrales beatdown (Floyd beating Corrales (RIP) not Acelino's quit job against Chico). A fight with Casamayor didn't make sense after he lost to Freitas especially since Floyd moved up in weight. I acknowledge there was a window it simply wasn't the cards.

He tried to get a fight with Kotsya Tszyu in 2005 but Tszyu's camp saw bigger money in Hatton and because he wasn't tied to HBO like Mayweather was it was an easier fight to make. So they went with Hatton and Mayweather went with Gatti and it was decided that the winner faces each other.

Immediately after the Gatti fight Floyd tried to get a fight with Cotto or Hatton who was fresh of his stoppage victory for Kostya Tszyu. Cotto and Hatton were both sitting ringside when Floyd destroyed Arturo Gatti and neither of them were willing to step in the ring with Floyd without a few more fights under their belt. Arum didn't see the logic in a Mayweather Cotto fight and suggested that it was 'premature.'

So he tries to get a fight with Winky Wright after he beat Arturo Gatti; Winky and his handlers refused anything less than a 50/50 split. Floyd was still a Bob Arum fighter at that point and Winky was a Gary Shaw fighter. Neither wanted to budge in the negotiating table. Floyd who was still at 140 was ready to come up to 160 to fight Winky but money prevented this fight from happening.

Incidentally Gary Shaw is the same guy who advised Winky to turn down Oscar De la Hoya's offer for $6 million in guaranteed money plus $6 for every PPV buy over 600K. It should be noted that Winky has never gotten an offer that lucrative from anybody since.

    http://www.sptimes.com/2005/07/26/Sp...weather_.shtml

So when Floyd Mayweather was up for renewal of his contract his national profile was rising, he wanted big money fights. So Arum wanted to throw him in there with Margarito and give him $8 million for his trouble but that fight would come with strings.

But Mayweather also wanted to fight:

    Cotto for $10,000,00.00
    Hatton for $10,000,000.00
De la Hoya for a $20,000.000.00

Arum rejected Mayweather's proposals saying that he'd get:

    $8 million for Margarito
    $7 million for Cotto
    $7 million for Hatton

The De la Hoya fight was simply out of the question.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/box...ory?id=2420382

So what did Floyd do? Bought out his contract from Arum for $750K and fought Baldomir for $8,000,001.00

    De la Hoya for $25,000,000.00
    Hatton for $20,000,000.00
    Marquez for $15,000,000.00
    Mosley for $22,5000,000.00
    Ortiz for $25,000,000.00

De la Hoya, Hatton, Marquez, Mosley and Ortiz are all Golden Boy Fighters.

Margarito, Cotto, Clottey and Pacquiao are all Top Rank Fighters.

The moment that Cotto was no longer a TOP Rank Fighter a Mayweather fight materialized.

    Coincidence? Not likely.

    Ducking? You tell me.

For all his faults, Floyd has always looked for the toughest challenge and when that wasn't possible he looked for the best payday.

The problem people have with Floyd, is that he never looks vulnerable. People who are supposed to give him problems, dont. Therefore they are labeled unworthy. Which isnt true. He's just on a different level. He's on an ATG level. A level that no other active is on. He's on a level where he makes great fighters look ordinary. Because no one else takes on his resume and goes undefeated. No one.

Most of them are dead. H

He's is the best ever. Name a fighter more complete. He didn't say he was the greatest. He said he was the best.

OK... prove he is the best ever. He didn't say Greatest because he is trying to skirt around Ali's moniker

    Good question Beouche.
Floyd has taken on many top fighters and keeps winning.

Possibly Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya.
