Do you think Robinson would have fought for the light-heavyweight championship if Archie Moore or Ezzard Charles was the champ? Robinson saw an opportunity in Maxim and took it. Cotto may or may not be the best at 160, no one really knows. What is an undisputed fact is that Cotto is the lineal champ at that weight. This kind of reminds me of the argument about why didn't Mayweather fight Margarito instead of the lineal champ Baldomir. GGG may be the best fighter at 160 but he is not the "man" at that weight, Cotto is. Regardless of the condition of the previous "man" he beat to become the "man".

 

I totally understand that. I just don't feel like Martinez was the "man" anymore due to his health and Cotto already took that opportunity. But I completely see where you're coming from.

 

That's what I'm saying, although in hindsight, I wouldn't have considered Floyd's victory over Martinez legit IF it happened in 2014. Had they fought in 2013 or before then yes. But my thought process is: why go after Cotto when you could've pursued Martinez? As much as I think the fight is more competitive should it happen in 2015, since IMO Cotto appears better, I don't think Mayweather would be the "man" at 160.

Edit: And this is coming from someone who's a fan of Floyd. I'm not a ***** and I don't show double standards, at least I try not to. If I do then, hey, I'm only human.

 

If this happens, then May is on the brink of achieving what only Hank has. 3 weight lineal champion SIMULTANEOUSLY.

I would have to put him several ranks above in the ATG rankings, possibly top 10-15 if this happens, possibly higher.

No comparison actually. Armstrong was the champ in three divisions when there were only eight. There is some obscene number of divisions now. Mayweather would be lineal at two of the original divisions, which isn't bad.

 

Hank's definitely ranks higher, I never disputed that. But who else in the modern era has been lineal in 3 different weight classes?
