Stephen Espinoza: Mayweather ‘Laser-focused’ On Making Pacquiao Fight

Showtime Sports EVP, GM Confirms Ongoing Fight Negotiations

    1/17/2015 4:15 PM Eastern -

    By: R. Thomas Umstead

Boxing and pay-per-view champion Floyd Mayweather is “laser-focused” on putting together a May 2 fight with Manny Pacquiao and negotiations are ongoing, Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza said Saturday.

Espinoza confirmed that there are parts of the overall deal that have been completed, but a final agreement for a May 2 Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has yet to be reached.

“Talks are continuing and we’ve made meaningful progress, but we still have a significant distance to cover on a number of open points,” he said. “Until the whole thing is done, nothing’s done.”

Espinoza would not provide specifics on the talks. Showtime, which has two more fights on its six-fight TV deal with Mayweather, and HBO -- which has Pacquiao under contract -- are in negotiations to co-distribute the event via PPV.

The last time the two rival pay TV services teamed to distribute a PPV fight was the 2002 Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson fight.

Earlier this week Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said the Filipino fighter has agreed to terms to the fight, but added the undefeated Mayweather had not signed off on the deal.

But Espinoza said that Mayweather is not hesitant to fight Pacquiao, but his strategy has been to keep as much of the negotiation out of the press as much as possible.

“Some has perceived that as lack of interest, but it’s the opposite – he’s so focused on getting it done that he doesn’t want to say anything publically that would complicate the negotiations,” Espinoza said. “He wants it as much as he’s ever had, and our marching orders are to do our best to get it done a fast as possible.”

Espinoza, speaking from Las Vegas in support of tonight’s Showtime telecast of the Bermane Stiverne-Deontay Wilder heavyweight championship fight, added that Mayweather will fight on May 2 against Pacquiao or another opponent. -

If this is true, and the important parts of the agreement between Pac and Floyd are settled - then I have no doubt HBO and Showtime will dot their I's, cross their T's, and bicker over how each penny is divided on their end.

No, we can clearly see through the bull****. He has kept fooling everyone for the past 6 ****ing years. Cotto-Mayweather II was always in the plans by Mayweather and Haymon, and Mayweather will duck Pacquiao again.

You're not exactly impartial on this subject anyhow so what you say is moot IMO

Floyd has never been "laser-focused" about fights he's gotten made to the point he wasn't talking and even if it actually is the case this time(which I doubt), it's just dumb to play it that way with all the disappointment that has come before. Pacquiao has signed the contract, and it's been signed for almost a week now. He's doing all the talking since Floyd gave the Showtime interview back in December. He's even got a commercial that is effectively making fun of Floyd's reluctance to fight. Is there any real doubt what the hold up is here?

    *sigh*

Just like the height and reach advantages of Oscar, Cotto, Margarito, Algieri, Shane Mosley all posed such a problem for Pacquiao.

    Smh.

People have to realize at this stage for BOTH guys... reach and height are not hard to deal with at all with the experience that they have.

That will not be a factor. at. all.

Lmao, there is no contract! If the networks haven't figured out a deal how can there be a contract. Stop believing everything bob says... Manny, im sure has agreed to the terms but that doesn't mean he's signed anything. They wouldnt even bother drawing up a contract until everything is agreed upon... If like they say & floyd hasnt agreed then clearly there can't be a contract ???? Use your brain

word lol. These dummies thinking Pac already signed and it's Floyd holding up the fight because he won't sign. The contract doesn't exist yet. Once HBO/Showtime comes to an agreement, best believe the contracts will be written up with the quickness.

Is there any doubt that Floyd's lil ho ass has NEVER wanted the fight?
