considering Dirrell's rankings, including #1 at WBO, I'd think it's likely he will get a title shot this year. I think he's not going to risk the ranking by taking a major step up in class, he'll go straight for the belts.

No, he has not been KTFO, but without sounding like Rico, I think the signs are there that his chin is not the best. Of course, it might be; time will tell. He has never been chin-checked, though, and he's never been in with anybody who wasn't a tired old journeyman or a punching bag...so...yeah, he looks great against this calibre of opposition. And...despite his rather high TKO record, he's got very little power indeed. One of the reasons he's getting the "TKO"s is because referees are happy to oblige by stopping it early, with his opponent in no real trouble, e.g. against Oganov.

The WBO route is the easiest, but Balzsay has a bit of a punch about him, more experience, and, realistically, you'd have to pick him to knock Dirrell out.

I'd be delighted if Dirrell went for it this year, but it would be a hell of a step up...so, it's very unrealistic. This being the WBO...and with Balzsay taking only tune-ups for the next 2 fights...it's almost out of the question.

Let's return to this thread when he fights for the title, and we'll see who was right. I don't think he'll fight for a title sooner than April 2010, at the very earliest.

I think both fighters are being moved so slow that it is embarrasing. Dirrell's fight this weekend was a disgrace. Both fighters are 4 1/2 years removed from the amateurs and they are still fighting club level (at best) fighters. This tells me that their handlers don't have much optimism for their skills. I might be proven wrong, but normally if a world class amateur is moved this slowly, there's a reason for it.

More than likely both fighters are going to pad their records so that they can go directly into a world title fight based off a padded record of 25-0 or so. This way the fighter and their promoter will get one decent payday before they have their "0" taken away in devestating fashion and drift into obscurity.

I know that by American standards someone like Dirrell looks like he's being moved slow, but he's not! He's only got 18 fights under his belt...so, when you compare him with someone like Dawson or Pavlik or Taylor, etc., he's not that far off!

...and Ward, well, he's only 25. As I keep saying, within 2-3 fights, they could easily be fighting for a title, at their current rate of progress...

...was someone like Bute, who wasn't moved up slowly at all, moved up any faster?

Dirrell, I wouldn't know if he fell on me. I've never seen him, or even heard much about him. Ward has been farting around for years and hasn't stepped up. Will he ever? I lost interest a couple of years ago.

I said he'd get beaten TO THE PUNCH, as in his handspeed is slow, and his reflexes aren't that great. Those things aren't going to get any better as he gets older. He's been carefully paired against really slow opponents so that the flaw doesn't look glaring, but it's there, and it's not something fixable.

Balszay doesn't have significantly more experience than Dirrell. Outside of fighting Inkin, his level of opposition has been the same as or possibly lower than Dirrell's.

I think this thread should also include Daniel Jacobs who might just do better than Dirrell and Ward. He seems more powerful even if his opposition was weak.

Of these 3, Jacobs has the biggest potential, although both Dirrell and Ward can easily reach the world title level. Who's the better of Dirrell and Ward is a question we should ask of their daddy, Gennady Golovkin, who might answer neither, my other children Lee, Bute or Despaigne or Korobov would knock them out.

Yes. I wish Miranda were put up against Dirrell, because there would be a good chance of him knocking him out. He won't most likely knock Ward out, though. Dirrell has next to no power and his chin doesn't look like much either. He would beat most people in a 4 round fight, but this is professional boxing, and he won't go far, in my view - you need to be able to do more than just box well. Ward on the other hand, I would pick to outclass Miranda without too many headaches.
