    good point.

There is no shame in Dempsey taking a knockout at this point in his career. He made his name after this with Kearns anyway.

I think it remarkable Dempsey survived as long as he did without Kearns. how he got by during the hobo-pass the hat period as a fist fighting punk without sustaining serious injury and taking what ever fights he could with new managers he found along the way is amazing.

All great fighters had great guidance from the start. Joe Louis was bank rolled by numbers guys and joe jacobs, ail had the Kentucky group, Frazier had cloverlay, marciano ended up with a powerful matchmaker...

As soon as dempsey hooked up with kearns he caught up.

I kind of would have liked to agree, but you're wrong.

    1. There is not any circumstantial evidence of Dempsey-Flynn being a fix, since second-hand hearsay isn't even considered being circumstantial evidence (if I remember my LA Law correctly:D)

    2. Ali-Liston II would seem very fishy even if there was no film of it. First-hand accounts would still tell of the ringside crowd screaming "fix" and even Ali furiously motioning Liston to get up, as if wanting him to stop his charade. They would also tell of many spectacors plainly thinking the fix was in.

Not to mention George Chuvalo being interviewed ringside and absolutely going off on the sham of a fight, and round table discussions held prime time on national television debating the merits of the fight. NOthing even close to approaching that ever happened with Dempsey-Flynn 1. In fact, the fight was taken on its merits by everyone UNTIL Dempsey later won the title and developed this indestructible aura. It was only then that people went back claiming otherwise and almost always they were doing so for a specific purpose, not to suddenly clear the air.

To me, that was a legitimate stoppage.

Dempsey simply got caught. It happens.

The thing about fixed fights, is that the people who get caught or implicated, probably don't do it verry well.

The smart guys probably took it to their graves. If you somehow won the title then it probably upset the apple cart.
