I just heard Spencer Oliver say: "Joshua will reign, I believe, as the greatest heavyweight of all time" And the conversation just carried on as normal. I haven't been following the AJ hype in all its details over the past year, (although I do remember the AJ-Martin fight where they prefaced the event with references to Muhammad Ali and the rumble in the jungle), but I really didn't know it had reached this level where people can just say crazy **** like that without anyone batting an eyelid. I don't know how seriously to take it all. I'm really starting to feel a bit sorry for AJ in advance of when he loses (this fight or some other future fight). I know it's just a sport and he's made a lot of money but the way they are building this young man up to be so great in such a short time is a little bit reckless. When he loses the reaction is bound to be as over-the-top as the hype they are building him up with now. It's not healthy. It's strange. A few fights back he was just a prospect stepping up to British level and dubious PPV main events with the Dillian Whyte fight. Now, having defeated no one else of note, they are exploiting the commodity to the point where he's seriously being called up to surpass the likes of Muhammad Ali ? There's something unsettling about it. I thought Gerry Cooney and Frank Bruno had it a bit hard in the 1980s with unreasonable expectations and hype. (Mike Tyson had a bit too but he lived up to it as was brought along with a very busy schedule and it helped that he came along during a slump. Tyson of course was a great fighter. Still, even so, even he imploded somewhat after a couple of years.) I think AJ's in a similar position to Bruno, but modern media coverage and hype intensifies the whole thing tenfold. So far, so good.
Liking Klits workout.....he looks like he's gonna be a different prospect than AJs team have planned for. I agree that the AJ hype is totally ridiculous. AJ is lucky he's in an era of not so good HW contenders but in an Ali era he wouldn't make an undercard fighter. I like AJ but the hype is sickening. It's bloody good for British Boxing though.
LOL was that really said.AJ is too stiff and robotic and that makes him hittable. He's good no doubt but the right kind of fighter will beat him and beat him badly.Fury with that awkward Prince Nas style will do a job on him imo but he would have to be in tip top shape.I honestly believe young fighters like Nathan Gorman and Daniel Dubois who are only 20 and 19 respectfully are only 12 to 15 months away from beating AJ.
Joshua's just as bad talking about how he's aiming to be a billionaire. He's bought into the hype as much as anyone.
The sky hype is just ridiculous. Paul ****ing Merson said that Wembley has taken over vegas as the place people want to box! Granted he is **** as a pundit in his own sport but this is the **** sky are filling peoples heads with. Its ridiculous
Yea it's gonna be a long fall from grace 18 fights in and his record isn't half as good as someone like lomanchenko whom rightly deserves some hype as he's beaten legitimate guys early on.
Completely agree, It's got completely ridiculous now, hopefully he isn't buying into the hype himself. Inevitably he will lose at some point and the stuff people are coming out with at the moment will make it so much worse when he does. Those sort of expectations being put on a fighter are not helpful, as they can only ever match it or fall short, with the very high probability being the latter.
Why do you care so much about what happens outside the ring? It sounds like you're paying attention to the hype, which is exactly what they want. You can either buy into it or ignore it. We all have our own minds and know what's what when it comes to Joshua. You can't blame Sky for talking it up - they want to sell PPVs. Bottom line is we don't know what will happen Saturday or how good Joshua is or isn't - yet. But at least appreciate the much needed shot in the arm for the division instead of complaining about it. You all seem to be forgetting how we've suffered over a decade of dullness for the "richest prize in sport". It's no wonder MMA has overtaken boxing in popularity. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...weight-boxing-due-to-lack-of-US-interest.html
