Let me just use this as an example - my buddy whom I've known since third grade let a friend of his use his car. My friend in no way or form was involved in the drug world, guess what - his friend was. What was the car being used for? Drug trafficking. Even if my friend did not know what the car was being used for, it is still his car/his responsibility.

Long story short, my friend is now in jail simply because the car was his.

Come on guys, it's not so hard to comprehend.

Cheato was caught "red handed" he was ready to step into a ring with illegal substances in his wraps, i dont understand why anyone would try to defend him. The lab report refers to a hardened gauze with traces of calcium and sulfur. He was banned.

That is not true BigBone. The CSAC came out with a statement saying why they suspended Margarito. The guideline, rule or w/e, basically stated that the CSAC had every right to suspend a fighter they caught attempting to "cheat" which definitely involves having substances where they should not be located. They referenced their rule and I posted this quote/statement but I guess the thread was deleted - can't find it

Of course they have the right to suspend him, and in the end, that's what they did: they caught Margarito with an illegal wrap, and even though he and the trainer testified Margarito knew nothing about it, and of course he used legal wraps in the actual fight, they suspended him regardless. They had every right to do that, but without evidence presented against Margarito's involvement, this decision is highly questionable and it simply doesn't make Margarito guilty. Do I agree with some kind of punishment since his trainer tried to cheat? Let's say yes. Do I believe Margarito knew about it therefore guilty? I read no evidence on that, so I don't assume he's guilty.

The Commission simply did not state Margarito knew nor did they state he used illegal wraps in previous fights. However, the boxing media and the fans went further and judged him guilty, even though there's no evidence whatsoever (but there's testimony against it) that he knew about Capetillo's attempt or that he used illegal wraps before. Why do you assume he knew about it if even the Commission didn't state that and why do you assume he used illegal wraps before, when the Commission didn't even comment on previous fights? Without any kind of evidence against Margarito, he is simply innocent according to law.

Go to jail? Banned for ever? Based on what?

Margarito is guilty of attempting to enter a ring with illegal raps on his hands, regardless of who put them there or knew about it, they were in his gloves and he has to take responsibility for them

Which he did: he was suspended for a year and he still can't get a licence, even though Capetillo testified for him. In fact, he got the same severe punishment as the definitely guilty trainer. Yes, some kind of punishment might be justified: he was caught with the Capetillo wraps and Capetillo is part of his team, no doubt!

But please answer this: how does his responsibility for the trainer makes him GUILTY and a CHEAT in the media and fans eyes, when he was definitely not found guilty of knowing about the wraps, nor there's evidence of cheating in the past? How do we get from responsibility for the trainer even without knowledge (fact) to the media and fan judgement, that he's a cheat, in fact a career cheater who should be banned for life, and he's personally guilty of loading gloves therefore should go to jail (fiction)?

Ok, your argument is flawed. Yes, you are innocent until proven guilty, that is true. It is also true that there is no evidence Margarito used loaded gloves in ANY of his previous fights.

I use to believe Margarito used gloves against Cotto, but after the beating Cotto got against Pacquiao, who we all know does not use loaded gloves, I now believe Margarito did not use loaded gloves against Cotto.

However, you cannot honestly say that Margarito did not know Javier, his trainer, was loading his gloves for the Mosley fight. It's HIS hands and HIS gloves! What was Margarito doing when his hands were being wrapped? Sleeping? Drinking? Smoking? Watching TV? There is no possible way Margarito can say he did not know his trainer was wrapping his hands illegally and have it not be a lie. Unless Margarito has prosthetic hands that Javier can detach and take to the next room so Margarito can't see what is going on, the whole Margarito did not know what his trainer was doing is a bold-faced lie.

Please cite your source that says there were "trace amounts" of anything in Margarito's hand wraps.

Here we go again... no, we cannot possibly know whether Margarito knew about it!

You should understand that handwrapping before such a fight takes several minutes from start to finish, and the trainer has to apply a lot of material and layers before done. Now applying a thin, white, soft extra pad that can harden a few minutes later shouldn't take more than a few seconds, and that pad doesn't even look different than the previously applied stuff!

Now tell me this! How should a fighter, who's preparing mentally for the fight and NOT a handwrapping expert, recognize such an extra pad, if the commissioner, who's JOB is to watch the wrapping and has seen hundeds of them before, didn't recognize? :think

He has to accept responsibility for his gloves and whats in them, end of story. If he didnt know then he should have known. He i persume hired his trainer. Hes guilty of having illegal raps in his gloves and attempting to get into a ring to use them. If his trainer went outside the room and punched someone then obviously thats a different matter but the trainer was wrapping his gloves and thats part of what cheato pays him to do.

bigbone, i understand where you are coming from. i also understand where those who disagree are coming from as well...

its kind of a gray area....it seems a lot of people seem to think he should be punished as severely for attempting to do something than if he had actually carried it out. its hard not to feel this way b/c the whole point of loading your gloves is to go into the ring and use them...

but you are right, margo himself was never found guilty of knowingly putting an illegal substance in his gloves and he never made it to the ring. you are also right to note the layers of "security" that are supposed to be in place to watch out for this kind of thing.

people get infuriated b/c of what can happen should someone make it to the ring w/ those types of wraps. it can end someone's career and threaten their health/life. this is the basis for a lot of the angst and is justifiable. BUT, there is also the points you make about his knowledge or lack there of and the point that he never made it to the ring. so do you punish him for what he was going to do or for what did in fact happen??

i deal w/ these kinds of issues all the time in my line of work. my perspective is different b/c i deal w/ the same kinds of issues on a daily basis (albiet in a different context than a boxing match but the issues and decisions require the same analysis nonetheless.) I say my perspective is different b/c you think differently when the person's life is in your hands.

Personally i think he got off amazingly lightly with the one year ban and i think the coach should have got a life ban, so i think he was very lucky
