Where a shorter fighter can utilize their jab to great effect is when they’re also the better mover. There is no doubt in my mind that Cotto is the better mover in this fight, I can see him slipping Margarito's punches and using the jab almost as a counter weapon, rather than a distance keeper. , his skillset since moving to 147 seems to grow and grow and grow, to the point now where his fights are absolutely impressive for the way he’s able to control the distance, work to the body and do so without being hit… unlike the older days where it seemed he was taking a shot to give a shot. Margarito will hit Cotto, often.. but he will pay a price for this as Cotto will work to the body, probably slip one into the groin (Cotto does this on purpose, I’m 100% sure) and break down the Tijuana Hurricane over the course of the fight. Margarito will annoy Cotto with his punches in bunches but Cotto has effective defense routines that should see him avoid a lot of damage and when he gets his opportunity to dig it to the body, I can see that really hurting Margarito, solely because he’s too tall to be at this weight. Cotto UD12 or late body shot stoppage.
Cotto should work on movement and creating odd angles for countering opportunities. Also, STAMINA, he's gonna need it against a volume power puncher. I think Cotto can take the decision. Its gonna be hard to outwork MArgarito so he needs to employ a solid gameplan. However, I don't know what to say when Antonio lands some heavy shots. I can see Miguel pulling it off with movement and slick counters with speed, but then again I can see Cotto hitting the canvas too many times and getting stopped...what a fight
Fellas, as long as cotto keeps his head moving latteraly and not really bending over (open for margo's wicked uppercuts), and in a position to shift backwards as tony comes forward with his loved 1-2, then fire the right uppercut, he should be fine. Tony reaches quite a bit and is susceptible to this. Also as everyone else has put in, Cotto's left hook should be his bread and butter, either thrown in 2's or 3's, or downstairs after he attacks the head. He is very good at varying his points of attack and I feel Tony will have trouble with this. So as long as Cotto fights his own fight (hopefully a smart one), then he should be able to win this one. Props to both of these fine fighters for taking such a tough and risky fight. Especially Cotto. :good
While you should never be allowed to speak on Margarito because of your world renowed bias, you just schooled Guru.
:rofl Could anyone imagine Pimp C and the old "Carlito" trapped on an Elevator together?? Dont worry Pimp, my money's on you walking off the elevator:good They gonna need a stretcher for the other guy. Dont hurt him 2 badly though, that guy couldnt help himself.
Not really. He had the fight in the bag and he was cruising. there is a big difference betwee cruising and getting backed up. this fight will come down to whether or not cotto can take Margie's punches. Margie has a great chin and cotto has been rocked badly a few times. Also, it will be interesting to see if Cotto will try and box him because if he does, he will definately win, but if he stands and trades, it's a toss-up. Margarito only comes forward, but does run into a lot of shots.
That guy is SPECIAL aslo. I think his predictions come from fortune cookies. They might as well the cookies know just about as much as he does. SSM is a totally different fight than Marg will be. SSM moves and Boxes better. Margarito is a hard punching, cement chinned MW @ WW whose size and stamina make him a force for anyone to fight. Yet? It can be done:yep Cotto has shown the type of ability to do it. As long as he stays completely focused and doesnt get careless or overly aggressive. It should be unanimous like 116-112, 117-111, 115-113. Yet Margarito knows this is HIS opportunity so I expect he'll bring the best he has and could make it a little closer. But styles usually prove out:good
I agree Cotto should win. His boxing skills are better and I never considered Tony to be anything more than a B class fighter. He works very hard but at this level you need the talent only a few people have. I want to see how many punches Tony can throw against such a formidable counterpuncher. Cotto's timming is great!! But I want to add something. Cotto needs to get to the ring already warm and sweating. Very awake and very ready. If he makes a mistake and allow Tony to get him with one of those uppercuts early in the fight, the night could end very fast. Margarito is not Judah.
I'm still not sold 100 percent on Cotto's chin. Yeah, it seems stronger at 147, than when he was weight drained at 140, but Margarito is a formidable customer - more threatening to Cotto's consciousness, imo, than an aging Shane Mosley, or never-was Judah. I think Margarito will wear him down and stop him late.
I think Cotto has to fight on the outside to take advantage of his better jab and speed. Margarito needs to get on the inside where he is stronger and more accurate with his short hooks and uppercuts. Margarito is also an amazing body puncher and could give Cotto fits if he shortens the range. Both fighters get stronger as the rounds go on. I give this a late round tko. Judging by the last meaningfull fights of the two I see the Williams that beat Marg also beating Cotto and the Mosley that Cotto beat winning against Marg only cuz of his speed. I give Cotto a slight advantage but whether or not he wins is up in the air. It's gonna be the fight of the year for sure! :good
I think that most of you are neglecting to address the fact that Margarito has a half foot advantage in both height and reach. Its not easy to get in range to jab upwards at some one like that. As a relatively short amateur I often faced this problem. Cotto's jab will only put him in range to eat some serious leather. And who said you cant apply pressure and not smother some one? Calzaghe did exactly this in his "victory" over Hopkins just a few weeks ago. Especially if Margarito lands an early bomb or two to keep Cotto wary, he can apply serious pressure from a distance where he can land and Miguel can't.
