Because Boxing was even with those sports. Boxing in the 60's and 70's was easily more popular then basketball. Boxing was on cable. You could watch Sugar Ray Leonard box on saturdays for free. Boxing is somewhere between tennis and lacrosse in terms of coverage in this country.

Again just try to be intelligent.

Please list the Eurobums Holyfield should have beaten to be a world class fighter in his prime.

Hell Holyfield if nearly became a Heavyweight champion at 48 with pugilistic dementia before he was robbed against Valuev.

Clearly an example of the Eastern Euro monsters that would have struck terror into the hearts of Ali and Foreman.:lol:

From a participation standpoint, absolutely not. There was still plenty of mainstream exposure, but the number of U.S. fighters in the 60's and 70's was still significantly less than it was in the 20's, 30's, and 40's and certainly less than the number of people playing basketball in high school and college instead of fighting. The 20's are really when the sport peaked in terms of the sheer quantity and depth of U.S. fighters.

Of course safer sports are always going to have more participation. Soccer is 1 or 2 in the US in terms of participation. Means nothing to whats popular and what the best athletes want to get into.

As I keep repeating, and now I'll post the article

You really do seem to have completely skipped over my initial point:

Boxing may not be as popular in AMerica as once it was, but according to numbers, it is still vastly more popular than in any other country- indeed in thenext 10-12 leading countries combined. Lets re-do the numbers again:

    America- 425
    Britain- 38
    Canada- 35
    Germany- 35
    Ukraine-28
    Russia- 25
    New Zealand- 24
    France- 16
    Poland- 11
    Cuba- 10
    Uzbekistan- 9
    Nigeria- 7
    Italy-6
    Bulgaria- 5
    Finland- 4

    You finished 2nd, not 1st!

We just competed in the commonwealth games, India got one more gold than us, but we had about 50 more medals....they still beat us, athletics is rankd by golds....not runner ups.

Is MMA REALLY more popular than Boxing? I didn't really think it had become such a minority sport.

On an ESPN poll 20 some % liked boxing, 44% liked MMA, and 30% didnt like either.

Worst then boxing being less popular then MMA, is the 30% ***gots who dont like either.

The center of heavyweight boxing is in Germany now. It is not because of boxers being other sports. Soccer is huge in Europe, but does not affect boxing.

This is what pisses most people of about the americans, the fact they seem to think there athletes are the elite not only in there country but the world. Now i admire americas rich sporting history, they dominated athletics and boxing since well hell for ever, i and most euro guys will happily agree, BUT remember in boxing eastern europe for the most part was not in there and its not just a ****ing coincidence that the moment the wall came down in a decade or so, there dominance began to fade in the heavier weights.

But the bit that has really pissed me of, is MichiganWarrior's views that the NFL guys are superior to the rugby guys in europe and else where, which is ****ing a shocking thing to say. He and a few other americans on here have said about that lomu video how small the other players were, now this shows me and should show you that they have no clue about the sport, no clue that lomu was a professional as was most of the Kiwi team at the time, and most of the teams they faced were part time guys, the game has been pro worldwide for about 20 years now, and the differences in the builds and strength (but not the skill imo) is like night and day, but you not knowing anything about the sport proves how truly pathetic you are with such sweeping statements.

Your pathetic because yes the NFL guys are fantastic athletes (again not all but there are some wonderful ones in there), but yet with a few words have binned the whole of the sport of rugby with one wipe of you arrogant ****ing hand, you have no ****ing clue what your talking about, you need to ****ing go watch and play some decent level rugby, tackle and tackle without ****ing any breaks for 40 mins per side, while sticking to the game plan of your team, then come back and tell us how easy it ****ing is.

Sorry to the americans on here who can see there are other sports with big powerful guys who would make excellent boxers (bar the chins none of us can ever be sure about any big guys chins), but **** some of the kiwi, fiji, south afrcian, england, french, irish and other teams have frightening looking men who can tackle, scrummage, run through walls, and run for the whole game, and yet this total ***** on here MichiganWarrior has rubbished them because he just cant get his ****ing head round the fact there are sports outside of america who have just as good athletes.

Hell i could be a **** and start taking the **** out of NFL and the weird fact the winners of the superbowl end up as world champions, what the ****s that all about ????, but whats the point, i dont mind the sport to be honest, i like strategy type games, and AF has a lot of that

You can say the opposite is true as well, that boxing has robbed other sports of superstars. Take Andre Dirrell, who no doubt would be Usain Bolt's toughest competition had he chosen sprinting.
