"Rosario eventually gained a record of 20-0 with 18 knckouts. This led to talks of a title fight against world lightweight champion Alexis Arquello, to be held in Miami, but Arguello abandoned the division to challenge Aaron Pryor in a rematch."

Arquello was aging.....could Rosario have beaten Alexis at that stage?

I think the answer to your question resides in Arguello's first performance against Pryor. In other words NO.

It would have been interesting. Ramirez stated in no uncertain terms that Rosario hit him harder than Alexis did, but Arguello also had a better chin than Edwin, and was a tremendous sharpshooter who placed his shots with deadly precision. El Chapo faded badly in the first meeting with Ramirez, and that one was only a 12 rounder. Alexis was very much a 15 round performer, and his 74" inch reach could also pose serious problems for the 5'6" Rosario.

Nobody could bomb out Arguello quickly Arguello in slugfest. Edwin may have packed a bigger punch than Alexis, but did he have a bigger wallop than Ganigan? El Flaco Explosivo proved in the rematch with Vilomar Fernandez that his boxing skills were still very much intact in 1983.

Overlooked in Pryor/Arguello I is how superbly Alexis performed for 13 rounds at an insane pace set by the Hawk. The most spectacular punch Arguello landed was in that thirteenth round, the type of single shot that would later do in Billy Costello. Pryor was superhuman on that night. Rosario never was.

Both fighters were actually similar in their approach. Rosario was cognizant of the fundamentals and deliberate in his destruction. Arguello was a stand-up technician with ice water in his veins and good power, though not quite at Rosario's level there.

Rosario and Pryor, on the other hand, are not nearly similar enough to make inferences about what Rosario would do against Arguello. In fact, I see Arguello handling Rosario and stopping him late. Arguello's height, reach, straight punching, chin, stamina, and superior experience would see him through here.

I think Arguello stops Rosario early. And brutally.

I was never that high on Rosario and that elbows out boxing style--which gets you ko'd sooner or later. Alexis threw a devastating left hook to the body and Rosario is available for it. And that elbows out defense leaves a huge opening for a sharpshooter & assasin like Arguello. Lesser fighters were able to penetrate that defense and a straight puncher that doesn't telegraph is always going to be a tough matchup for Rosario--he needs the hooker types.

Argeullo would score the brutal one punch ko here, similar to the Ray Mancini fight. However if he fought Camacho, i see him losing a decision.

I mentioned Arguello's performance against pryor, but not as a direct comparison to Rosario. I just meant that Rosario would not beat a version of alexis that could still perform at that level.

My apologies. This is why our grade school teachers told us to "read carefully". I was a daydreamer and probably wasn't listening!

No. Rosario never would have been able to handle the shots that Pryor took. Arguello KO 6.

I agree. Camacho would have been a problem. Alexis` only glaring weakness, slow on his feet. he needed to set and punch. I thnk his very underated body attack would have softened up Rosario for the kill. Pryor destroys Rosario ...

Arguello was still at a high enough level to beat anyone, But Pryor at that point. An undefeated Rosario was extreemly dangerous! So Arguello would do his usual feeling out, in the early rounds. Don't take any chances with Rosario's power & drag Rosario into the late rounds & dominate the fight. because that is where Rosario is at his weakest & Arguello is at his best. Arguello is too smart to get caught in the early rounds. & He is too patient to force a wild exchange early & possibly get caught. Arguello 13 TKO.

Arguello would have taken Rosario out into deep waters, almost in a Monzon-like way, and then drowned him. In other words, a conclusive ko or tko in 12 or 13. Rosario's chin would have let him down against Alexis and he would have actually met the canvas.
