An S&C coach is not necessary if you figure out how to do strength and conditioning on your own. Today, considering all the available information out there, a strength and conditioning coach is not necessary at all, unless you're at the elite level.

Just out of curiosity what would your routine consist if you were a boxer? Which bags, mitt work, rounds on each, etc. Also what would you strength training look like? I am curious because you have many ideas that most people either don't know about or don't use. Not trying to troll, argue or anything of that sort just wanting to be exposed to new ideas/styles :good

I don't know. A training routine should be tailor made specifically to target an athlete's weaknesses.

As for the boxing training, I don't know. I don't give boxing advice.

dempsey, one of the reasons you might want to train boxing last half of the day is because he's fighting at night.

consider early in camp, train boxing in the morning so he can learn skills fresh, then flip it half way through so he's being challenged and training closer to competition time.

In my opinion boxing is a sport of striking, S & C tend to concentrate on pushing and pulling. Is it best to condition your body by striking, or pushing?
    Train hard or train clever?
For me those with sports science degrees and masters are of no use in the world of boxing.
Did they study physics, do they understand physics ?
Here is a clue, the human body is one muscle not 300 or so as described in their books, any weight training will unbalance this one muscle resulting in loss of power. To be inperfect fighting shape the entire body should be moving as one muscle not disconnected as weight training will cause.

S&C coaches have 1 purpose and that is to strengthen the fighters body to be able to undergo the wear and tear of training. They aren't there to make you faster and they aren't there to make you punch harder. Get over it. Like it has been said over and over, a strong muscle is better than a weak muscle. Muscle strength serves the purpose of transporting as much power as possible that was generated.

Boxing trainers job is to bring a better boxer to the ring each time.
S&C coaches job is to bring a better athlete to the ring each time.
    Its that simple.

Bruce Lee wouldnt agree with you there. He may not of been a boxer but its still unarmed combat. Everything should be built around defence. Even attack is defence.
And before anyone states that bruce lee was a film star only. They obviously dont know the real bruce lee

My guy is now 22-0, and has had an S&C guy for about two yrs now. He has never had a weight problem or a condition problem. I believe an S&C guy frees up the boxing trainer to just work the boxing end. I still believe that a beginner needs more boxing work so he doesnt really need an S&C guy to begin his career IMO, any decent trainer can get a guy ready for a 4-6rd fight.
I found that the S&C guy I had at the beginning of my guys career, overworked him. The S&C guy had no experience with fighters, maybe that was the reason. The point is I got an S&C guy now as my guy goes more rds.
