The 'Aussie battler' idea comes from the original Australian pioneers and founders, the British and Irish stocks basically, the people that built the country from nothing and endured harsh conditions. It has nothing to do with the people that rocked up to a pre-built place. And it definitely has zero to do with people who came to an affluent 'first-world' country for a better life. That's literally the opposite of being a battler. As for Anglo-saxons not treating foreigners well, all these people that complain about them can show us how their people accommodated the globe and did it with a smile. They wouldn't even like foreigners joining their tribal community clubs. The hypocrisy is epic.
Jeff Harding is a perfect example for this thread his wars vs Andries were magnificent. Even against McCallum he was outclassed but never stopped coming forward and even made it rough for McCallum down the stretch.
Say what you want about Tim Tszyu and Kambosos both guys are coming off tough losses but looking at their socials both guys are back in the gym training with no talk of retirement still chasing it.
Lucas Browne coming forward like a Sloth who had been injected with a tranquilizer before being comatose by Whyte was my personal favourite Aussie boxing moment.
Michael Katsidis embodies that Aussie fighting spirit. I also remember Troy Waters putting on a brave showing against Terry Norris in a great fight before he could no longer take punishment.
You see guys like Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson who get everything their own way and are still unbeaten talking about retirement when they have never even had to walk through the fire then you have our lads like Tim and George who are road warriors they have won some and lost some but they just want to fight. A different breed down here.
There have been numerous American fighters over the years who would have broken Tim or George's spirit, though. It's selective and not representative just to pick out Tank and Shakur, although they definitely embody the worst of modern-day fighters with their attitudes, I agree with you there.
Disagree especially with George who has had his ass kicked by Haney, Loma and Hitchins his win over Teo was also a very tough fight. His spirit has still not been broken.
Fair enough. I felt like it was in the latter stages of the Lomachenko and Hitchins fights, but there's no shame in that at world championship level. But if we're looking at the fighting spirit of the likes of Ali, Holyfield, and Frazier, I think the fighting spirit of Americans could even surpass the Mexican greats. Definitely not in the case of Shakur or Tank though.
A lot of US fighters have heart especially in the past but most of the big fights are on their terms. The Aussies and the Mexicans are usually the ones on the road. The Aussies 90% of the time go in as the underdog.
