Tony Sr. had his sons in boxing gloves as early as age 5. Soon other kids from the neighborhood joined in, and in no time at all, a boxing team was formed.

Tony Sr's. San Antonio teams were always major forces in amateur competitions, the most gifted pupils being his sons. Mike, Sammy and Tony Jr. all won National Golden Gloves championships. Of course, they all turned pro. The youngest, Paulie (NOT the former bantamweight champion) had a number of pro fights as well.

Lopez/Ayala was the 1979 Ring Magazine fight of the year. The whole thing is on You Tube.

The Ayala's and the Hilton's....both prominent boxing families. Both representing incredibly talented boxers and tough individuals. Most with tremendous problems. Can you imagine a family feud between that group of characters?

Robbie Epps, who trained with the Ayalas, walked out for no apparent reason, saying he learned all he could from Tony Sr. I know very little beyond that, but apparently this is how it all began.

Mike Ayala had a few more title fights, all at bantamweight, with mixed results. He finished with 45-6 professional record.

Currently, he still lives in San Antonio and is an air-conditioning technician for Sears.

yeah i have never seen tony r fight, but i could just imagine what he must have been like, especially earlny on too.
    Just unbelievable.

Were any of his brothers have a similiar style to him, eg similiar power, fighting style.

Fro my memory of the Ayala-lopez war Mike had good skill but not really strong enough and not enough power in his punches.

Also are ther any good articles on Mike Ayala or any of the rest oif the family?

From what I understand, Mike, Sammy and Tony Jr. were all aggressive fighters. As amateurs, they all won National Golden Gloves Championships. However, neither Mike or Sammy had nearly the power Tony Jr. had. They were bantamweight and lightweight, respectively, whereas Tony was a Jr. MW. The youngest one, Paulie (NOT the former bantamweight champ), had a few pro fights as well, but that's about it.

I'm always fishing for more info on Tony Jr. myself, from different magazine articles to other forums. It's amazing what kind of info you can dig up.

Another good article on Tony Jr. is in the January 2000 issue of Texas Monthly. It was done right after Tony got out of jail. It's now a bit outdated, as he has since gone back to jail. Nevertheless it is very detailed and very informative regarding the history of the Ayala family. I had to subscribe to Texas Monthly to read it, but it was cheap ($12 a year, as I recall) compared to Time or Life , and well worth the read.

Mainly it's about Tony Jr. and to a lesser degree Tony Sr. There's a little on the other three brothers as well.
