Beyond a certain point, a fighters chin is probably not bad enough to bail you out, and I think that both of these guys fall into this category.

The difference is that Lewis could be taken out with a single punch that found the mark, while in Louis's case it always took a sustained beat down.

Lewis was defeated by the "Immortal" Hasim Rahman....and the "Legendary" Oliver McCall.....I'll take Joe Louis...wouldn't you?

    Sure.
I would pick the guy who got beat by 192lb Schmeling, knocked down by an hotdog muncher and beat out of the Ring by an dragging strider.
    Easy pick, isn´t it?

The bottom line is that Louis's losses, are less detrimental to both his record and presumed durability, than Lewis's losses are.

The evidence is there. Got easily rocked by Mauriello as well.

The bottom line is that you just cannot make a save pick in both ways. Both could punch, one was sharper, the other punched harder. Both could be hurt, but were very good fighters in general. Lewis better from the distance, Louis better on less distance.

What I´m saying: How can someone make a save pick here? Imho there is just too much evidence against both fighters to do that.

No you can't make a safe pick in this kind of match up.

That is what makes it fun.

Don't worry, no money is on the line!

    Prime for Prime: Lewis (?)

A good fight, tho. No doubt. Yes, Louis got rocked by scrubs but Louis also threw an amazing right hand and amazing combos. Lewis liked to throw and rest, throw and rest. If Louis timed the rests, good night. If Lewis connected, good night.

So you're saying that Lennox punched harder than Joe?

Who's to say that Galento couldn't beat Lennox Lewis? Galento did say that he fought his best against taller fighters because they had so much frame to hit.

I'll be the first to say.

I don't think Galento could beat Justin Fortune.

That's what I see too, but I wouldn't bet much on the outcome. With heavyweights at this level pretty much any outcome is a wide open possibility unless there's a glaring style advantage one way or the other.

So Galento is worse than Patrick Smith 5-11-2 (11 KO losses), who destroyed Fortune in 2 rounds. Ok.

    Very interesting matchup.

Perhaps the 2 best trainers in the business as well---Steward and Blackburn. Which guy would find fatal flaws with the opponent? Which would have his guy better prepared? Tactics and strategy would be crucial and avoiding mistakes.

I'd lean towards Lennox on a decision or late stoppage due to cuts/swelling. Not the stoppage from putting Joe on the deck and keeping him there, but the ringside physician type stoppage.

That jab is going to be very very tough for Joe to deal with. And the Louis footwork is slow so I think he has a constant disadvantage in the mobility department. but I think Lennox jabs and moves away and does not step in. That way Louis has to re-set those feet and try to get himself in range. A safety first type affair for Lennox and may look a lot like the McCall rematch. Not pressing on the gas or taking minimal risks. Or the Tyson fight and just let the accumulation factor come into play the last third of the fight.

The arc of Joe's punches will have to be different whenever he could get inside and I think anyway, his customary accuracy just would not be there against this guy.

So, Fortune is worse than Neal Clisby who destroyed Galento. Ok.
