northern ca used to produce MUCH boxing talent,and was considered a boxing city, but has since become the mma capital of the world. take my home city of san jose for example. rougly the same demographic as la, jus w a smaller population (1 millon). growing up as an amateur boxer, every neighborhood had their own gym, also w p.a.l. boxing gyms on the east west north n south side of the city, and plenty of private pro gyms. mma has pretty much wiped all that out. theres only 2 real hardcore boxing left in a city of 1million! all the fighting talent is going to mma.
makes me sad
its a dream of mine to open a gym for all the youngsters in my neighborhood. lots of talent out there!

Any prospects coming out of the San Jose area? What about Salinas? There use to be talent coming out of Stockton back in the days.. Yaqui Lopez,Fred Hutchings and a few others. Anyone now?

 

He is Filipino-American wether you like it or not. He was a national amateur campeon in his weight category in the American amateur boxing circuit.But like I said, you can take the boy out of Philippines, but you can't take P.I. out of the boy. His wife is American. I see her with other Filos she just looks lost with the locals.

I hear you just in my Varrio(neighborhood) we have had 2 MMA champions Larry Landless,Charley Valencia and 2 gate keepers Jay Valencia,Joe Camacho..... Last rated boxer was former top contender Rudy Zavala (Rip), we also have undefeated Carlos Molina 14-0. and im just talking one city Rosemead pop 50,000 No boxing 'gyms within the city... BIg MMA gym opened up though thats where the Rosemead talent is coming up(MMA)... Especially since the local high school is wrestling powerhouse.

 

I like that.

Its hard to argue with donaire himself who calls himself a Filipino fighter, says he is representing the philippines, is covered in the pinoy flag when he fights with no stars & stripes in sight etc etc, was born and grew up in the philippines, but then again if americans are so desperate to pass him off as an american representing american then just let them get on with it and just continue to smile at the lcd at them

Donaire is a pinoy american, not an american pinoy, his children will be american pinoys and no matter who they represent will always be americans. This isnt slagging off naturalized americans but there is a difference between naturalized and natural born, its even in law. Even if donaire started calling himself an american, covered himself in the flag etc he would still be a pinoy at then end of the day, if he went to japan and got citizenship hes still a pinoy but now a pinoy japanese.

Just like arthur abraham, hes not german, hes armenian german at most, bute is not canadian, lewis is british with canadian influence and the rest.

Thats right iatsch I knew there was someone from Salinas, who would have thought,there would be a Mexican MMA Heavy weight champ before a boxing one... Salinas is a tough town suprised they havent had boxing champs or contenders / I known Charlie since he was a kid. At one time Charely was one of the best breakdancers in LA.... When he was 10,11 yrs old we use to take him to breakdancing parties to blow all the older guys out.... He did a couple videos. Hes a little bad ass. I dont think he was good as he was but hes stiill a solid guy, gatekeeper type.
PS yeah i know that you know what Varrio means. that was for all the gringos and euros.
