That is a obviously you are not considering Ray Robinson, because it is unfair to rate anyones opposition against his wink.
Many would have a far better and more suited word than "enlightened", but hey, everyone's entitled to their moment in the sun :hey
IMO a more accomplished and better fighter, but Moore faced better fighters. The likes of Armstrong (past it), Angott, Lamotta, Gavilan, Basilio, Olson, Maxim, Fullmer etc. are a fantastic bunch of opponents.. but Moore's is a bit above. How about this for a list - Sammy Angott faced: Henry Armstrong Willie Pep This content is protected This content is protected Beat that.
I think Bert Lytell is as good as Chase, among those he beat,Williams Cocoa Kid Baroudi Burley I would include Maxim as well.though not sure who to leave out.
Good shout, Lytell came very, very close. It was originally meant to be a 10, but I just couldn't prune it down any further.
Here's where I stand - Harold Johnson was around the eighth best light heavyweight of all time. Bivins was around the twentieth best light heavyweight all time. Maxim was perhaps the twenty fifth best light heavyweight of all time. This is Moore's best division, and against these men, he is 11-2. Stick that in your statistics pipe and have a mathematical smoke, why don't you? Spinks just didn't face the same opposition. He fought some very good light heavyweights, but not often enough. He didn't have a genuine pound-for-pound great like Ezzard Charles up his arse either. On that matter, I'll say the series with Moore was closer than the 3-0 would imply; the first fight being competitive, the second being very close and perhaps disputed, and the last one; well, Charles was almost out himself just before the shocking finish. Charles, being the virtuoso he was, had a knack of turning the trick when he was in his prime - against anyone.
Not even close, sorry. Winning record, perhaps, but not overall opposition faced. Moore fought Muhammad Ali! That's like Ray Robinson losing to Ezzard Charles.
I don't think the Ali and Marciano fights should hold anything against Moore's legacy. I do agree though on what the writer of this thread is saying. Moore's level of competition is amazing , but it must be remembered that at LHW , Charles fought the same level (more or less) and established himself as the best of the era , I believe that is why he is the greatest LHW of all-time. Tunney did a similar thing in the 20's, but not as emphatic (his level of comp was good , but the 1940's had more). Burley's best weight was welter , his best work(wins) was middle , still though the guy who said that Joey Maxim should be above him is talking madness to say the very least. I think one on one Spinks would have beaten Moore , I think this would be a great fight , Moore was so crafty and Spinks a master boxer. Both were murderus right-handed punchers. I do think that Spinks was prolific at the weight , this was nver proved (because of his level of comp) but I still think it. Its a hard one to pick , but I think Spinks.
Then in that case I am sure there are a few journeymen with no wins but better names on the resume than Moore...
