Sorry if this has been done, but I recently watched a special on trainers featuring the guys associated with Tyson. D'Amato, Atlas, Rooney, Giachetti. Who's the best trainer of all time in your opinion? Without focusing on the resume or credited number of world champions, but how they developed a fighter from the start. I'd argue that Charley Goldman is right near the top for what he did with Marciano, who supposedly had two left feet and poor balance when he started boxing.
Charley Goldman proved to be something of an alchemist there! In terms of who can turn lead into gold? Most Jack Blackburn fighters could have been less than world beaters with the wrong trainer. Despite the recent debate over who was the youngest lineal heavyweight champion, Cus DaMatto is the answer either way.
Intestingly enough, Stallone and the entire cast of Rocky were impressed wih Burgess Meredith and the knowledge of the sport.
I think it's Arcel Trained fighters like Benny Leonard in the 20's to Roberto Duran. People always talk about the advancement of boxing and technique, yet Arcel was training fighters from the 20's till his end. He trained many incredible fighters. I'll never forget how Arcel could never stop writing and praising Leonard "mental energy" and his ability to think in the ring.
Rez,Ray Arcel was probably my choice also.I have read many articles about Arcel. He was highly respected at Stillman's gym, the mecca of trainers during the golden age of boxing.and yes he raved about Benny Leonard.:good
Eddie Futch, Charley Goldman, Cus D´Amato, Ray Arcel, Jack Blackburn, Emanuel Steward, Freddie Roach...... Oh, and Amílcar Brusa and José "Kid" Jofre deserves a mention, great trainers !
I believe it was Harry Wiley, who was a trainer along with George Gainsford, trained fighters out of Salem Crescent A.C. I remember when i was a youngster Salem Crescent won so many Golden Gloves awards.I once shook Ray Robinson's hand before he turned pro, when he was in the Salem Crescent corner after a bout,at Ridgewood Grove Arena...
