Henry Armstrong Ezzard Charles Roberto Duran Barney Ross Kid Gavilan Benny Leonard Larry Holmes Ceferino Garcia Freddie Steele Tony Zale Max Baer Those from Arcel and untouchable by any trainer ever.
Arcel did not necessarily train that many fighters. Often he'd be brought in for strategy a few weeks before the fight. He had a full time job -as a purchasing agent for the Meehanite Metal Corporation after '54. Freddie Brown deserves most of the credit for Duran's progress into greatness. Nevertheless, I go with him. He handled about 2,000 fighters. Seeing photos of him behind Benny Leonard, ready to lift him off the stool and then seeing him 50 years later in the same position behind Roberto Duran, is pretty telling. Futch is a close second, truly a master strategist.
Agree, and thats what makes a trainer great in my opinion, the ability to set gameplans and expose opponents weaknesses while hiding their fighters own and using their best attributes. There arent too many around like that.
It is no coincidence, that the two fighters who beat Muhamad Ali when it counted for something, were both trained by Futch.
that's my thinking as well, plus how well regarded he is amongst fighters themselves. but again, arcel trained the two best lightweights ever (probably), hard to argue with that
