i think that the zale v. graziano trilogy is highly underrated now that it has aged beyond the grasp of the mass cultural memory--people tend to gravitate, naturally, toward the fights that took place in their time. however, anyone who loved vazquez v. marquez would, undoubtedly, get the same kind of thrill out of watching the zale v. graziano trilogy...a series in which both participants could, and did, box clever at times (and to greater and lesser degrees), but there was a tripwire there in every minute of the fight that, if crossed by one punch, gesture, defensive lapse could ignite a terrific, all brass balls and bravado brawl. zale and graziano (so like the excellent and hard man, tony demarco) don't get their credit for being every bit as rugged, crazy brave and die hard tough as basilio, fullmer and lamotta--even if they were not measure up, in one way or another, to the talent levels of the other i mention.

morales v. barrera is remarkable to me because it was a first-rate trilogy fought between absolutely world class fighters near the peak of their powers (that is, at least, for the first two fights...and both rose to the occasion of the third fight). so many of the great trilogies in recent and distant memory--ward v. gatti is the prime example--were terrific fights made between guys who were not elite fighters.
