PernellSweetPea you have some excellent post, great insight and info, and you got to see it live to boot. Damn I wish I could've seen that live!!
Thanks, Well it was an honor to see it live, although I guess it was not that rare since there were thousands there. When the fight started for a second you thought you were dreaming. I expected a feeling out round and all of a sudden they started to unload and hurt each other. Happened quickly and we were all sort of stunned. I love Marvin Hagler and I know he says he was not hurt but he was. You see it more when you were there since Hagler's whole right leg sort of gave in and his body tilted and he wobbled out it. He recovered quickly and Hearns was right on him. They were both sharp and came to fight. Hard to say if we will get that kind of fight again in the first round. Two guys have to come in confident of a knockout and not be deterred by what is coming at them and you might get it again. But hard to say. I doubt the two top guys in boxing will ever do this again. And to be honest Arguello vs. Pryor was another incredible fight just two years before Hagler and Hearns fought. Same thing as Hagler Hearns in that you couldn't believe it was happening. Both confident of their skills. That is what I can see is required for a great fight. The guys have to think they can punch and stop the other guy at that moment. As for Pryor vs. Arguello, I never thought there was anything in the bottle -the one he mixed. I thought if anything it was gatorade or something ridiculous like that. The rematch showed how Pryor was just too strong and too quick, although Alexis was psychologically not the same in 83 as in 1982. Alexis showed so much heart but he could not deal with the speed and relentlessness of Aaron. I guess I am partial towards Hagler and Hearns and Pryor Arguello since they were in the 1980s and in a great era of boxing.
Best fights I ever saw Bow-Holyfield Vitali Lennox (best heavy fight in a long time) Hamed Kelly Barrera vs Mcinney/Morales
you were at both Arguello/Pryor and Hagler/Hearns? Lucky guy. Wow. I saw Hagler/Hearns on PPV and I saw Arguello/Pryor on HBO. I wish I would have seen those fights live. Those must be great memories.
What about Bert Cooper vs. Michael Moorer? Great fight. Not a Hagler/Hearns quality, but still exciting. Neither Moorer or Cooper took each other's punch well.
This has saved me hassle of making the exact same post. It was a good fight but not even close to being in my top 10, let alone the best of all time.
Hagler/Hearns was the greatest short fight ever and best round ever. You cannot find a better first round and on top of that they are ATG fighters. Very rare. Usually with the best round ever you have a great fight. They came to fight and they were hard punchers. It didn't last long because they both could punch. That is why the fight was so exciting, both guys knew they were going to knock out the other. Too bad Hearns broke his hand, but that is what happened.
I'll have to third Pinto/Gomez....it was a mix of boxing and brawling look at the the a savage 12 rd. Have a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0h8uKgkU9s
YES, this is my ALL-TIME FORITE too!!!! Non-STOP action for three rounds! The BEST of the BEST fight EVER!!!!
They were wrong. Tompkins said you have to simply it just comes down to heart. No this was skill also. Pintor was ducking many punches and that was making Gomez tired. This was skill at the same time heart from both guys, which I why I say a fight between great fighters is a level above a fight with Corrales and Castillo. This fight here was skill. I am not insulting Corrales and Castillo, but honestly saying they were not at the high level where that fight was the best ever. Gomez/Pintor was not just guys swinging and hitting. Watch how Pintor is ducking punches. He is getting hurt but he is ducking and Gomez was getting tired. Great fight.
Corrales vs Castillo 1 did not get started until after the 7th round, before that they weren't really opening up, they were just in close fighting. I prefer to see guys who are throwing but throwing with proper technique. Wild swinging doesn't cut it for me. Barrera vs Morales 1 is definitely one of my all time favourites. Hagler vs Hears was awesome back then but looking back at it now it was a good fight but like Corrales vs Castillo it was good for the time it happened but watching it back now the only thing I liked about Hagler vs Hearns was the 1st round and for Corrales vs Castillo 1 it was the ending. Apart from that I think both a bit overated in general... There have been much better fights that only the boxing purists would have seen...
Corrales-Castillo 1 did involve proper technique. Foreman-Lyle was wild swinging. Cobb-Shavers was wild swinging. Corrales-Castillo was an in-fighting clinic. Brilliant combos up close, with both guys effectively showing how to mix in body and head shots in a combo, positioning on the inside.
