The best fighter at 140, all time, you'd give Hatton even odds against?

Accidentally posted this thread in the general. I said prime Tszyu. Thoughts?

Chavez would have murdered Hatton worst than any other 140lbs fighter with the exception of maybe Pryor.

Hatton is my #1 favourite boxer, but I have problems ranking him in this division. The main reason being that the division has largely been a stepping stone for previous ATGs with many passing through, winning a title and then stepping up to WW, such as; Ortiz, ODLH, PBF and Sweat Pea.

In terms of real 140lb fighters, I agree that both Chavez and Pryor have the beating of Hatton. My pre-war knowledge isnt great so I'll have to decline to comment further on those fighters (I'll leave that to the real experts on this forum).

Saoul Mamby, Kostya Tszyu and Hatton I tend to rate more or less alongside each other.

    Let the mud throwing commence...

The only fighters I can think of are perhaps Nicolino Locche and Kostya Tszyu and he'd have to be fighting them in England with a ref that allows him to constantly hug. Even still, I'd probably still favour Tszyu and Locche. He might have a chance against Buddy McGirt too over 15 rounds, but I think Buddy likely banks enough rounds ot get the win. Perhaps an Eddie Perkins on an off night too.

    Jose Napoles
    Julio Cesar Chavez
    Aaron Pryor
    Antonio Cervantes
    Duilio Loi
    Nicolino Locche
    Packey McFarland
    Barney Ross
    Tony Canzoneri
    Jackie Kid Berg
    Ike Williams
    Eddie Perkins
    Pernell Whitaker
    Wilfred Benitez
    Carlos Ortiz
    Oscar de la Hoya
    Meldrick Taylor
    Kostya Tszyu
    Henry Armstrong
    Benny Leonard
    Roberto Duran
    Buddy McGirt

All the greats would have easily beaten Hatton, at least if he had someone right in front of him Ricky may have had a chance. Chavez wasn't unbeatable at 140 anyway. When the going got really tough at the heavier weight- he quit. :yep

Chavez would've systematically picked Hatton appart, I think. I'd hardly bank any fighter of that weight class overcoming Chavez in a brawl (OK, maybe a few).

I don't think Hatton has much chance either but at least Chavez would be there to hit. He wouldn't have laid a glove on Benitez or Locche.

ps. I actually misread the thread title and though it meant 'great 140 fighters'. for the record.

Yeah, true that. A peak Benitez give Leonard a very tough assignment when they fought and was one of the greatest defensive fighters I've ever seen. Hatton would stand next to zero chance.

Chavez is a better style match up for Hatton than someone he wouldn't touch like Benitez or Locche, but neither one would have beaten Hatton the way Chavez would have. Hatton's faster than Chavez, but Chavez hit harder, better boxer, much, much better chin, more versatile, better stamina, and stronger at 140, which would be Hatton's downfall. Ricky needs to be stronger than his foe to win.

He'd have a better chance at winning against Chavez than against the defensive wizards, but he wouldn't win, because Chavez did practically everything better, and Hatton would take a brutal beating.

    None of them!

Hatton would have been ****ed by Pryor, Chavez, prime Tszyu, Benitez, Cervantes, Taylor, Loche, DLH, McGirt, hell I even think a prime Vince Philips stops him, and Frankie Randall on his best days kills Hatton.

Hatton is a decent fighter who had GREAT timing in catching Tszyu at the end of Kostya's career. His career is largely smoke n mirrors.

Does anyone think that Hatton would be able to take the systematic beatdown that Rosario took as well as Rosario? I don't, and believe me it would have been a beatdown, with Hatton making it to round 8 or 9 before the fight would be stopped, with Ricky on his knees. Oh, he'd take it like a man alright, but it would be a brutal no-contest.

Prime Chavez gives Hatton a Greg Haugen type beating. Only Hatton is better than Haugen was, so he'd last longer. The end result would be the same though. Chavez forces a stoppage in about 8 or 9 rounds.

And a prime Rosario, if he moved up to 140, stops Hatton in a few rounds.

Like I said, all smoke and mirrors. He fought and beat Philips, Tszyu, and Castillo when all 3 of those guys were shot to ****.
