Out of all the fighters who were in the UFC for a short time and did not win a title, he is the one that I would think had the most potential to make an impact. He was big and his ground game was deadly to anyone without you good TD defense. Throwing him out after the JDS fight was an injustice.
JDS is a UFC fighter who has not won gold as well though. Doesn't the fact that he flattened Werdum rule Werdum out of contention on this thread? :huh
He was cut because he was shite !!!! Lets not skirt around that issue , the fact he submitted Fedor and looked to pull guard on Overeem for 3 rounds IMHO doesnt really change that
Wanderlei lost to Tito for the vacant UFC title in 2000, so he was there before he went to Pride. If not Wanderlei, I think I'd have to go for Fitch. 13-1-1 record in UFC. The one loss to GSP and the one draw to Penn. I imagine if this question is asked 10 years from now, we'll get a stronger answer than Fitch.
For some reason I thought you meant someone who is not in the UFC anymore, yes JDS would probably take Werdum again, but they are closer in ability level than the fight time suggests. People get caught with punches, it happens
Overall, I would probably go with Fitch. At heavyweight, I'd say Dos Santos. Did Carwin win an interim title against Mir? Are we counting interim titles as gold? If not, I would say Carwin as well. At 205, the title has changed hands so many times. Most of the top 10 in that division have held the UFC title at some point or another. I guess I would have to go with Thiago Silva. At middleweight, I'd say Maia or Marquardt. At welter, Fitch. At lightweight, I'd have to say Florian.
Carwin was interim champ, and is massively overrated. He's extremely dangerous based on power alone, but other than that he's extremely limited.
Faber's a good shout- he's such a solid fighter but not GOOD enough as it stands. Those top guys dance to a different beat.
And Kenflo's a G. That guy is sooooooo dedicated that it's difficult not to like his style. Conditioning wise he looked great in his last outing (thanks to Chaimberg conditioning).
Absolutely, Fitch wouldn't go to 185 and dominate everyone else but the champ. Hendo fights in two divisions and only loses to the very best. And I actually thought he did enough to win the Rampage fight because I gave him the first two rounds for control and the final round for rocking Rampage, though he failed to follow up.
