He couldn't have beaten prime Cuevas.

But, he certainly could have beaten the version of Cuevas that Duran beat. And he possibly could have beaten Moore. Think about it: those are the two guys Duran beat at 154 lbs.

Duran, with one sided losses to Laing and Benitez, is overrated at 154 lbs.

I would favor Duran over Ayala at 154 lbs, though.

Yes but we still have the fact he was using heroin and drinking quite heavily so i don't think he would have done his talent justice. Could be wrong.

Duran would never come into a bout against an offensive threat like Ayala disinterested. No chance.

Pipíno Cuevas. I read they sparred when Ayala was 14 and he left Pipino shaking his head in disbelief.

If Torito and Cuevas had sparred when Torito was 14, then Cuevas could have been 19, and
    World Champ in 1977.

    Antonio Ayala Jr.
    (February 13, 1963 – May 12, 2015)
Many have said Ayala was a boxing prodigy, he first fought at the age of five and compiled an amateur record of 140-8 with sixty knockouts. Ayala won National Junior Olympic titles in 1977 and 1978 as well as a National Golden Gloves championship in 1979. Veteran boxing writer Michael Katz claimed he was the best young fighter he had ever seen, Muhammad Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee said he thought Ayala could have been one of boxing's greatest fighters.

    Pipino Cuevas: (Dec. 27, 1957-current)
On July 17, 1976, he received a shot at the WBA welterweight title against champion Ángel Espada. Cuevas pulled off an upset victory by knocking Espada to the canvas three times in the second round. At age 18, he was the youngest welterweight champion in history.[1] In his first defense, he traveled to Japan and defeated hometown fighter Shoji Tsujimoto by knockout.

One of the greatest wins of his career was against Argentinian Miguel Angel Campanino, who boasted an impressive record (84-4-4), including a thirty-two fight winning streak. Once again, Pipino disposed of his challenger before the end of the second round.

On June 8, 1977, he faced veteran Clyde Gray who had only been stopped twice in his entire career which included fifty-eight wins. Yet again, Cuevas pulled off another second round knock out.

Tony definitely would've wasted Duran and Benitez with ease. And would've KO'd Hearns more often than not. Tommy's china chin and Tony's bruising power are s recipe for disaster. And would also take out Mugabi in a war.

And yes, a young Tony would tear apart Canelo!

this is the kind of fight Duran would love. I don't think Ayala could beat Duran at 154.. Stylewise Ayala has no chance. Stylewise. No way..
