A 5'10 188 pound short armed fighter who's easy to hit coming to Earnie Shavers,,,,recipe for destruction
Shavers is more of a 'could beat' than a 'would beat' kinda guy. He 'could' beat a lot of guys that are way better boxers than him and higher on the ATG table. In fact, he proved as much. I'm not sure if I'd favour him to beat any great fighters though.
What are the chances that Shavers met the best fighters he could beat? And did so in the first round? So I doubt it's Norton.
He KO's Patterson. Has a good chance against some of the HW's of the 80's like Berbick, Smith, Bruno, Witherspoon 90's and onwards - Morrison, Hide, Moorer, Botha are all very winnable 2000 and onwards - I agree that pre Manny Steward Wlad could conceivably lose in a manner similar to the Sanders fight. John Ruiz is also winnable
I know this ... Marciano would steam roll Shavers faster than Quarry did. Quarry...the counter puncher...blasted Shavers with a poor man Marciano immitation...bombing rights over the jab and swarming short hooks. I don't care if Marciano had crippling diarrhea and came into the ring at 178. Shavers is a niche fighter who beat other niche fighters. Keep dreaming. Reality shows Shavers crumbling under the half assed pressure of a declined cruiser weight.
Do you think Cunningham hits as hard as Shavers though? That’s my point here and still he managed to stun and drop Fury. Usyk isn’t really relevant in a thread about the best fighter Earnie Shavers could beat. That said I don’t disagree with your post either. Usyk isn’t a big puncher himself and probably only at Cunningham’s level or less as you persuasively laid out.
Of course no. Maybe for you easier will be understand this comparision: if I had watched Norton fights and Shavers. I had no problems to predict where and when Shavers will beat. If I did not had problems with this on real time video, prime Lewis will turn this boxer into a paraplegic. I'm not joking here and fans obsession with " who beats harder " is a bit joke. You need to land properly and while Shavers might had landed on this ali from 70 ies, this does not mean that he will last 6 rounds vs boxer in his prime. Ofc if you will not start to argue that 70 ies Ali was in his prime. Tyson from 1988 th too will stop Shavers and maybe deliver him in hospital. Despite Shavers " had more power ".
Really, really good. Norton, a guy who was repeatedly whacked out early, and never won a title fight, is sometimes referred to as a "great," and is probably the lowest ranked "great" heavyweight. So Norton is the answer.
So Shavers happened to meet the best guy he could ever beat, and wiped him away in one round? I don’t know man. Norton is a solid answer, I get it. But maybe he could do more.
Once again, yes. What other "great" or borderline great heavy would you see him beating? I can't think of another.
You think he could replicate what McCall and Rahman did to Lewis, or is that too much of a stretch? Lewis seems to be the only elite ATG who was susceptible to those one punch KOs, and Shavers packs that punch. It’s definitely too far in the “could” side of the spectrum... Honestly I’d probably favor Norton over him in a fantasy fight had they not actually met.
I think Norton was wasted after the Holmes fight (most fighters probably would be). Still, I don't want to take away what Shavers did. I think the more reckless Lewis (early 90s) could have boo-boo'd and got knocked out, sure.
I'll take it all back if you can point out how Quarry beat Shavers with counter punching in that embarrassing blow out loss to a smaller man not even a HW by modern standards. And no, bombing a right hand over a crap jab is not a counter punch beyond Marciano. Neither was the flurry of hooks that looked like clueless kids imitating the Marciano vs Moore finish. Yeah...I'd stick to an "lol" response too. You're not dealing with choklab here.
