Ali had a huge entourage (probably much bigger) of mostly leeches and Robinson had one as well, but you don't hear these pathetic for them. Again: Duran doesn't look tired at all when he quits. Perhaps it would have become an issue further on, but here it clearly wasn't. The reason as to why he quit could have nothing to do with his physical shape. Here we have a guy that quits without hardly sweating, and all this BS about how it was because his abysmal shape - which hadn't revealed itself during 8 rounds so far - comes up. Pathetic.
Have a read of Randy Gordon's article at This content is protected if you haven't already. It's a scoop story that's told very well. I'm not making excuses for Duran, in fact I'm a SRL fan thru and thru. But the crash diet complete with a stream of duretic diet pills, 2 grapefruits, 3 steaks and gallons of orange juice on fight day, not to mention the inevitable stomach ache that followed, clearly didn't help Duran's cause. History records a SSL win. I'm pleased about that, and perhaps he would have been too good on the night for Duran even if Duran had have had a reasonable preparation (Randy Gordon certainly thought so). But unfortunatelty we'll never know Bokaj.
Yet the scorecards were pretty damn close. Inscrutable, certainly. Also, a major negative in his career to either quit or put yourself in the position to quit, especially since you were in the fight. Personally, I believe an inshape, focussed Duran takes Leonard again. However, I also don't believe in the woulda, shoulda, coulda crap. Leonard was the more professional, better prepared fighter who executed his plan better.
