Hmmmmm...........:think I have the same early-morning excuse Dave does, I guess. I made it a list of the best they fought, not beat. Didn't read the title properly.........

    Robinson

    LaMotta
    Fullmer
    Olson
    Abrams
    Turpin

(Basilio might be a better pick than Turpin)

    Monzon

    Benvenuti
    Valdez
    Fernandez
    Griffith
    Bouttier

    Hagler

    Hearns
    Leonard (imo)
    Roldan
    Hamsho
    Antuofermo (first fight)

As Mante said, Hagler has quite a few interchangeables, with the likes of Sibson, Duran, Minter, Mugabi etc.

Looking at those lists I'd go Robinson a clear no.1, with Hagler and Monzon pretty close, but perhaps the slightest of edges to Monzon.

I think robinson quite clearly has the better win list at mw to be honest.

What lets him down is his consistency, although I think it was only maxim, turpin and lamotta beat a prime roy.

However because he came back from retirement and was slightly past prime he never put on a consistent winning run. Which is where the other two have a massive advantage.

I like Fernandez but i think that he is one of those guys where the numbers on his resume makes him look better than he is.

Definitely, but it doesn't change the fact that in my mind, he got the better of Griffith twice. :good

Fernandez was very good imo.He usually gets forgotten as a Monzon opponent and was past his peak, though he was still highly regarded at the time in Argentina. Those would be really interesting fights to see, as a passing of the torch kind of thing.

Fernandez had a lot of padding (as the Argie's do) but fought a few old contenders and two ATG's (a total of what, five times or summat?) so I think it's clear he was a quality fighter and a good contender. Monzon's best 'early' wins IMO.

Beating Barkley five years later should also count for him.

Yes but i was only counting fighters on their worth at the point of fighting the 3 guys in question including the fight.

I've seen Licata and Bouttier ranked over Briscoe. Let's hear why.

Robinson: Fullmer, LaMotta, Olson, Turpin, and either Villemain or Basilio.

Monzon: Valdez, Briscoe, Benvenuti, Griffith, and either Mundine or Bogs.

Hagler: Hearns, Roldan, Hamsho, Sibson, and Minter. Mugabi could definitely be argued. Duran as well, I suppose.

At middleweight there is no comparison. If you count 168. Ray fought
    Hearns
    Duran,
Lalonde but Lalonde was a trick to get two titles and get Lalonde weak at 168 and win his 175 title. I love Ray but I never can say he really won those 2 titles that night. He just wanted to keep up with Tommy.

Minteer always looked very ordinary to me. I would bet my life that Roldan was much superor to Minter. The only reason Minter gets mention is that he held the title but to a man, Roldan would butcher him. So would Hearns
