Arguello for me, i've allways loved the way he never moved in straight lines going forward or backwards ever, instead allways circling to his left. I now its basic boxing 101 but nobody did it better imo

Defence is just as criminally underrated as footwork.

@JMP -- Hagler was the guy I looked up to as a kid. His footwork was impeccable. He was always on the balls of his feet, able to throw or defend, and able to move in any direction.

It's not just boxing. With any type of combat, the key to everything is footwork. That's where it all starts.

It's a whole lot of factors.

Brute power can trump skills. (George foreman)
Relying on footwork has a weakness too (if you rely too much on it), in the late rounds when you're tired your legs will tire too.
If you relied too much on it you're performance will degrade quicker than people who are more than an one trick pony.

George foreman and Shavers relied on brute power, wild swings that take a lot of energy.
It makes them super strong in the early rounds, but past round 5 they're degrading like some old person or whatever.

Wladimir Klichko doesn't rely as much on the brute power but more on other things like defence, and preserves more energy.
This makes him more constant over the rounds.
But against people who directly explode (Corrie Sanders) he is at an disadvantage early on, but grows stronger each round.
Since Wlad doesn't have the best chin and Corrie is strong enough, this can become fatal.

your problem here is you're assuming footwork is just dancing around the ring

    :yep

All the greats, one way or another, based what they had in the feet.
