I have created a 64 man tournament involving the most (all?) of the best Heavyweights of the time period.

All fighters have come to MSG in 2019 and will fight under modern rules, but over 15 rounds with neutral judges.

All fighters are assumed to be at their peak.

As it is a long tournament I will try and avoid clogging the board by doing four/five fights at a time, so you have four/five votes.

I have split fighters into eight sections, so their first three fights will be fights generally against fighters of their era or near their era.

My vote will only count to break a tie.

    First Round results thus far:

    Jim Jeffries beats Joe Jeannette
    Harry Wills beats Tommy Burns
    Max Baer beats Jimmy Braddock
    Cleveland Williams beats Billy Conn
    Muhammad Ali beats Jerry Quarry
    George Foreman beats Mike Tyson
    Lennox Lewis beats Shannon Briggs
    Tyson Fury beats Alexander Povetkin
    Wlad Klitschko beats Roy Jones
    Vitali Klitschko beats Razor Ruddock
    Evander Holyfield beats Buster Douglas
    Ken Norton beats Ingemar Johansson
    Floyd Patterson beats Zora Folley
    Joe Louis beats Max Schmeling
    Sam Langford beats Fred Fulton

I can understand how people have.

Moore/Charles in their Heavyweight prime I suspect would be more competitive than their 40s trilogy which seem fairly one sided.

And Corbett of the early 1890s is probably more impressive than the 1897 version who gave Fitz a very decent run for his money.

But is either enough to turn the results around?

New to this thread. There are too many matches that happened. Right, who picked Moore over Charles?

As for Dempsey beating Tunney, how? Tunney dominated him, and Jack wasn't that old or out of shape when the match happened...unless you think 31 is old.

How many rounds are these matches? If we are talking 12, I'd take Corbett over Fitz. 15, give me Fitz.

31 was ancient back then. Almost one foot in the grave.

I don't see how people could pick Corbett over Fitz. I'd expect Bob to beat him easier in rematch.

Dempsey had become a celebrity and starred in movies and hadn't fought in three years before he lost to Tunney ,,,,,he had become civilized

To clarify my pick of Corbett over Fitzsimmons, the rules lined out by TBooze said "Every fight is fought under modern rules over 15 rounds with every fighter at their peak." Corbett's peak was in 1892 when he KO'd Sullivan. He was about 26 and very active. The span until he lost to Fitzsimmons was 4 1/2 years, in which time he fought app. 7 rounds. From the same date in '92, Fitz fought 22 times, so it was hardly a peak Corbett that showed up to fight Fitz. But even so, under modern rules, Corbett would likely have been awarded that fight on a 6th round stoppage with Fitz down and bloodied. Of course it is all conjecture as we have never seen any of the action in 'real time', just grainy, jumping, archaic film. Still, it was enough where I could form an opinion that a peak Corbett would have taken Fitz.

3-0 is with a KO is pretty decisive evidence even though Moore may have been more comfortable at heavy weight. Evidence is evidence.

I think Dempsey looked a lot slower on his feet against Tunney and Sharkey than against Gibbons

He'd been out of the ring for years and supposedly injured his hips against Firpo (though I'm not sure how much the latter mattered at that point).
