I hear where you are coming from on this...maybe on a technical standpoint Carlos Ortiz and some of the others, Ray Robinson's jab was so smooth, it was a thing of beauty...But Larry Holmes built his offense and defense around the jab...it was the entire foundation of what he did in the ring. You knew EVERY time Larry fought that jab was the mainstay of his plan...And Larry did it for a looooooooong time. No one got around that jab, and you knew it was coming, and you knew Larry wasn't going to change anything. With that said, and to the degree that he relied on his jab. I agree....Holmes had the best jab.

Dino reporting in to assuage his monomania.

He has a special alert going on Google: anytime anybody posts the name "Wlad" or "Klitschko" he hurries over to reply with some slander

And there's nothing wrong with that opinion.

His jab was incredible although at times Spoon and Truth both out jabbed him and sometimes for rounds at a time.

Waldo based a decade of domination of the heavyweight division around his very versatile and extremely powerful jab. It was rarely exciting to watch but he won almost every round, and again, it was all based on his jab and positioning.

Holmes jab was hard and quick but not as versatile or as quick as Ali's jab. Ali had that great movement to go with that jab making him a hard target to hit and at the same time allowed him to hit at angles. The other thing to consider is that Holmes dropped that jab every time he threw it. He was always open and vulnerable to right hands. Ali with his great speed was difficult to hit solidly over his jab. Only later in his career (Shavers) did Ali slow down to a point where he became a target for rights over his jab.

But then another thing to consider is Ali is not a tall HW and isn't the rangiest.

Handspeed only goes so far when it comes to out jabbing the behemoths of today.

Tyrell Biggs, beat a man ranked in the top ten ( Jeff Simms) with one hand, his jab ,after breaking a collar bone in round 2.
Fought for 8 rounds with one hand.
Ty didnt have much else, but a great jab.
Other than that Pink Thomas' jab was superb until heroin blunted it.
    Overall Larry Holmes.

It's fine to say you think Holmes has a best jab ever but the "by far" bit is crazy but you've already replied to all that.

I actually like Hearns jab better than almost anyones. It is possibly the most multi faceted jab i have ever seen. Firstly he has so much reach and range, which was allied to great handspeed and really decent pop. It was used in a variety of ways, to pile up points (e.g.Benitez), to bust a guy up, to keep a guy off, to blindside a guy and measure for a right hand (Duran) and he used it both to the head and body. You could write an article on it.

This is right for me. Ali's jab is proven against great opposition. It would have been great to see how Holmes would go against such a fantastic level of opposition, both jab wise and result wise.

Ali, Holmes and Liston come immediately to mind in this one.

Page had a great jab but never did enough with it over a long enough haul. Dokes the same and he got a bit flat footed at a certain point. Douglas too, it would have been nice to fulfill his potential, like the previous pair. Thomas had a superb jab tho his stay was also short.

It's hard to put guys up near the top without some long term success behind them, rightly or wrongly.
