A lot of time is spent here ranking Hw's from different eras against each other but what I want to tap into is the vast knowledge here of many of the posters.
I propose we try and pick the best 30 in each 30 year span since the inception of gloved fighting a la Queensbury Rules. This would beak down as up to 1921, 1922 to 1951, 1952 to 1981, 1982 to date.
there are many expert posters here on these eras, the regulars here know who they are and also several enthusiastic new posters.
One rule only, we have to decide which period to place a fighter as he can only appear in one group but this doesn't matter much as we will be assessing them on their complete body of work.
I will list a rooster of the up to 1921 guys but anybody can feel free to add, subtract or criticize.
    This content is protected
and we can then argue the rankings.
    1880's to 1921 roster;
    Sullivan
    Kilrain
    Mitchell
    Godfrey
    McAulliffe
    Slavin
    Farnan
    Goddard
    Corbett
    Choynsky
    Jackson
    Denver Ed Smith
    Fitz
    Maher
    O'Donnell
    Ruhlin
    Sharkey
    Jeffries
    McCoy
    Childs
    Armstrong
    Griffin
    Root
    Hart
    O'Brien
    Gardner
    Burns
    Hart
    Johnson
    Martin
    McVea
    Jeannette
    Langford
    Ross
    Flynn
    Kaufman
    Clarke
    Gunboat Smith
    McCarthy
    Morris
    Willard
    Coffey
    Levinsky
    Carpentier
    Moran
    Miske
    Gibbons
    Norfolk
    Fulton
    Brennan
    Dempsey
    Wills

I make that 51 that we have to cull to 30 and then hopefully rate. This list is off the top of my head and I guarantee that I missed a few notables.

Great, hopefully McVey, Boilerm, McGrain, Mendoza, etc take an interest.
And if the likes of Klompton, Suzie and others looked at their eras of expertise and new guys like Lufcrazy, old boys like Cross-trainer and a host of other knowledgeable boxing guys that can make this really worthwhile.

I'll take an interest, but I think I'll leave this to those with specialised areas of expertise.

That's a really eclectic mix of posters you've picked out there matt! Anything you do in terms of the big picture is of interest to me, you've done some fascinating work down the years.

Thanks Mac. I think we should not worry for now about the position of the top 5 or so, we have had enough Tyson, Lewis, Holy stuff and deffo enough Johnson, Jeff stuff.
Much more interesting to see how Hart rates with Maher or Gunboat, Firpo with Buddy Baer, Tommy Jackson with Ron Lyle, Moorer with Byrd etc. What do you think?
EG Jeffries, Johnson, Dempsey, all top five and then fill the best from Corbet, Jackson, Wills, Langford, Fitz or whoever?

Give me a day or so and I'll break my guys into the required categories!

terrific idea that's much more representative of the era they fought in!
