Top six-won't split them for now. Joe Louis Gene Tunney Jersey Joe Walcott Ezzard Charles Max Schmeling Jack Sharkey 7 Tommy Loughran 8 Max Baer 9 Jimmy Bivins 10 George Godfrey 11 Primo Carnera 12 Billy Conn 13 Bob Pastor 14 Joey Maxim 15 Melio Bettina 16 James Braddock 17 Steve Hamas 18 John Henry Lewis 19 Lou Nova 20 Tommy Farr 21 Arturo Godoy 22 Maxie Rosenbloom 23 Tiger Jack Fox 24 Lee Q Murray 25 Clarence Henry 26 Turkey Thompson 27 Elmer Ray 28 Roland Lastarza 29 Rex Layne 30 Johnny Risko
Larry Gains beat Max Schmeling and Primo Carnera, he has to be in it. He also looks good on film. I would actually consider taking Turkey Thompson out.
Green Schmeling though and ditto for Carnera. Still i wouldn't take much persuasion to put him in, a good fighter, beat Godfrey too. Most of the 10-40 guys can be talked up or down, a lot of fine heavyweights in this period.
My pick of 34 to be culled to 30; Marciano Moore H.Johnson Valdez Jackson Baker Patterson Machen Folley Cleroux Chuvalo Johansson Liston Ali Terrell Cooper Quarry Frazier Bonavena Martin Ellis Foreman Norton Bugner Lyle Shavers Holmes Tate Weaver Coetzee L.Spinks Berbick Dokes Young ------ Two I've culled that most probably wouldn't have. Mildenberger Cl.Williams ------ The culled! Mathis Peralta D.Jones Ocasio L.Jones H.Smith Cockell M.Foster Satterfield Clarke Middleton Bobick Mercado Spencer DeJohn Walls Knoetze Pastramo
from what I've read yeah. Practically out on his feet when the fight was stopped so it's fair treating it like a tko victory imo.
Using your 30 (Baer instead of turkey), here's my take Louis Charles Walcott Schemlling Tunney Bivins Baer Sharkey Braddock These top guys were all the best at some point Carnera Had a claim to the lineal title Ray La Starza Loughran Godfrey Conn Pastor Maxim Bettina Hamas Lewis Nova Farr Godoy Rosenbloom Fox Murray Henry Layne Risko Baer The bottom end guys i think you actually split pretty good. Ray for a couple of years was damn near unstoppable and based on his amazing form during his peak, I put him right up there. La starza rates a bit higher based on his showings against rocky. I wasn't overly sold on Hamas but I think you were right so I'm gonna leave him in.
Finally a bit of tidying up; >1922 1 johnson 2 dempsey 3 jeffries 4 fitz 5 langford 6 corbett 7 jackson 8 mcvea 9 wills 10 jeannette 11 burns 12 maher 13 sharkey 14 goddard 15 sullivan 16 hart 17 slavin 18 willard 19 martin 20 o'brien 21 mc coy 22 ruhlin 23 mc carthy 24 choynsky 25 gibbons 26 gunboat smith 27 fulton 28 ed smith 29 childs 30 Farnan
Where does everyone stand on Paulino Uzcuden (or have i got the dates wrong). He would have to be very close to making it,
Im not a fan. However based on his best fights v Wills, Baer and Schmeling it would be very reasonable to include him. Seems fair to say he was around the level of Risko, Walker, Griffiths, Schaaf etc-could be in or out.
And his losses were all pretty close, with some other solid contenders from memory that included guys tuffy griffiths, Phil Scott etc. It is wildly assumed that Wills was completley shot but while he wasnt in peak condition, i think this is still a huge performance. Wills had just come off a strong fight with Sharkey and before that had dominated a fighter like weinert who was a good contender. And after that he blasted out all his competition, which was admittedly second rate. He only really lost to the very best contenders, and even then it was usually close and even debateable. I think he did a lot more than Turkey Thompson for example.
Turning into a Turkey shoot! Boilermaker makes good points Paulino lost close ones to Loughran and Carnera also. Think we will bump him in.
No way Uzcuden should get in. He screwed up a world title shot in a pathetic loss to Primo Carnera. You think if Larry Gains got that world title shot he would have blown it? Gains would have won a wide unanimous decision over Carnera like he did right here [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO0cndcdeY0[/ame]
Not an Uzcuden apologist but he was 34 and finished for the second Carnera fight. Gains I rate either in or close to the top 30 but like most of the top 20'ish to '40 ish fighters he had a fair few hurtful losses.
