Here are my picks for the greatest of all time in the eight classic divisions and the year they were at their peaks. Do you believe any one else should hold these positions?

    Heavyweight - Muhammad Ali - 1966

    Light Heavyweight - Billy Conn - 1939

    Middleweight - Carlos Monzon - 1972

    Welterweight - Ray Robinson - 1947

    Lightweight - Benny Leonard - 1917

    Featherweight - Sandy Saddler - 1950

    Bantamweight - Eder Jofre - 1962

    Flyweight - Jimmy Wilde - 1916

I don't honestly see the case for Conn above the likes of Charles, Moore, Spinks, Tunney, etc. At all.

Otherwise good picks, though I'd take Pep above Saddler.

Conn beat Louis in 1941 over 12 rounds and before getting careless in the 13th. He did beat lots of top heavies in 1939 and 1940. As lightheavy king he dominated the likes of world champs like Lesnevich and Bettina. This was a hard pick, because I do believe Charles and Tunney were even matches with Conn. Also Tommy Loughran in 1927 was right up there. However, I believe Conn would have clearly beaten Spinks and Moore.

Why Pep over Saddler? Saddler won 3 out of 4.

Yes, but Pep has a better overall record.

You don't rank Tarver over Jones Jr, do you ?

    Fair point.

Also, Pep was probably less of a fighter after the plane crash. It would have been interesting to see how the Pep that beat Chalky Wright would have fared against Saddler.

I take Hagler over Monzon, Roberto Duran (and Pernell Whitaker) over Benny Leonard, Pep over Saddler.

As Light Heavyweight kind he dominated the likes of Lesnevitch and Bettina, whereas Charles dominated the likes of Moore, Bivins, Marshall, Ray, Fitzpatrick, Maxim, Billy Smith, etc, most of those fighters he held multiple wins over, including Moore. As well as beating guys like the afore-mentioned Lesnevitch and even Joe Louis, whom Conn failed twice to beat. I just don't see how Conn compares to Charles in any way, shape, or form. Or Moore for that matter, or Tunney, and really even Spinks. I think Foster was a better LHW as well.

On an unrelated note, is anyone else having trouble posting?

    One observation.

If the war had not interupted his career Conn would have been up with Charles and Moore in terms of resume.

    I promise.

Robinson at middleweight lost to Basilio, Fullmer, Pender, Turpin. How could he ever beat the 1972 Monzon?
