mint! I can see it now "hold me back or I will kill him!". can you imagine how many people lou would have shot if he ever had a loaded gun?:yikes
To be fair though, an armed Lou Duva would have probably prevented the riot at MSG. The place would be empty in no less than 2 minutes. "Oh ****, Duva got a gun yo!" :yikes
and in boxing history there is a prety long list! dennis rapaport, fan man, naseem hamed, steve smoger, tysons bodyguard "crocodile" FITCH etc etc....
Bet he does that kind of **** in a pizzaria when they screw up his order...one or two too many anchovies.
Greg Haugen and Vinnie Paz were mouthing off at each other before that second bout of theirs..and Duva said to Haugen, "watch out or I'll take off my belt to you"..and Haugen replied " I could use that belt of yours to tow my truck"..pissed off Duva no end, lol.
LOL! that would actualy have worked! maybe boxing should loan Lou out to important political stand offs around the world? the whole middle east problem would be solved. Lou at the table with a gun. Lou duva, the one man Weapon Of Mass Destruction!
Yeh it was at the Mancini/Bramble 1st fight when Jonny Bumphus got starched in the 11th by "MAD DOG" Gene Hatcher in a massive upset. Hatcher caught Bumphus (The new Leonard) with a pacman/hatton crusher of a left hook & down goes jonny, he's concious by his legs are in spasm & he gets up & break dances all over the ring so it's stopped if my memory is correct then absolute mayhem breaks out as Bump tries to attack hatcher who's got his kid son on his shoulders celebrating but Bump still can't stand up straight & he still kept trying to attack Gene in the corner then Duva's face ( MOUTH/TEETH) fills the camera with punches flying all over & down goes Lou falling along the ropes & crashing into Hatchers corner taking about 6 ****ers with him who landed on top of him I've got the fight on VHS from back then, it's buried amoung about 100+ tapes that have lost their labels:|
Duva was a character to be sure..... .....but one thing to be said of him is that most fighters would be happy to have him in their corner. Lou literally and figuratively fought tooth and nail for his fighters.
Duva was the best trainer David Tua EVER had. Also had trainers Ronnie Shields and Roger Bloodworth with him. Shields was the hothead.
Again, I am sorry I haven't been on But I am still running the Diamond Glove Tournament and I have to call up 30 to 40 people every week to make sure they know where to go, when the weigh-ins are and who there boxing. Over 300 signed up this year, and although there were a lot of drop outs, we still have a lot of match ups. I have known Lou Duva most of my life. The last several boxing shows he did, I was his ring announcer. When he had his annual Lou Duva Roast, where the money went to several boxing gyms around Paterson, New Jersey, I was the MC. We had Tommy Hearns, Bert Sugar, Lou Albano, Bobby Czyz, among others attend. When Lou Albano died, I drove Lou Duva to his funeral. He didn't stop talking until we were about half way home, as he fell a slept. We worked together many other times as well. We put up a Monument of Joe Louis, where he use to train in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. He got all the boxing people to come, including Jimmy Bivins, and I again was the MC. There were about 1,000 people that attended. Two days before that we unveiled the Rocky Marciano Stamp. The Marciano family asked me to run it and be the MC again. I had Lou Duva and Chuck Wepner come as guest speakers. We also put up another Statue of Lou Costello in Paterson. In May, Lou turned 88 and he has slowed down a lot, But I still love to listen to him when he tells his stories.
