What i've done is i've lifted top tiers out of my top fifty at the poundage and organised them into a seeded tournament to uncover "the best of the rest" at the poundage, with you, the denizens of the world's greatest boxing history forum, casting the deciding vote. The difference between this middleweight tournament and the equivalent at 175lbs is that I've left ALL the guys with no footage in this time. I understand that makes things difficult and for some, frustrating but there are just far too many excellent and intriguing fighters from middleweight history. I understand this makes making a pick very hard, but i hope you'll still place a vote and make a post because obviously without your input the whole thing becomes meaningless.

Pick your man! Write however many details you like or don't in a post below. But maybe try to post, to keep things moving a little bit. You have three days.

And let's be nice. No reason for disagreeing over total fantasies after all!

15 Rounds, 1990s rules and ref. 10 points must. 18 hour weigh in. I'll only vote where there's a tie (or you have it really wrong and there's one vote in it!).

SF 2: Mike McCallum vs Sumbu Kalambay III

    MIKE MCCALLUM
Mike McCallum won an exciting fight against Nino Benvenuti in the first round, war breaking out in the ninth and sustaining itself through the twelfth before Benvenuti appeared to accept the hopelessness of either overhauling Mike late or stopping him. In the second round he entirely neutralised no less a figure than Emile Griffiths, consistently keeping him imposing himself at a thee-quarters range where he was consistently out-pecked in a dull fight. McCallum then rendered a pure professional performance in out-jabbing and out-moving Ken Overlin in a fight that stirred the blood of perhaps only hardened cornermen but mad McCallum a Semi-Finalist.

    SUMBU KALAMBAY
Sumbu Kalambay has booked little resistance in the course of the tournament, outclassing and widely outpointing Fank Klaus in the first round, doing no worse than a share on any one of the three judges scorecards. Even trying to roughouse Kalambay out of his glorious rhythm bore no fruit. Something more akin to a boxing match broke out in the second round against Reggie Johnson, but once again, the fight was one-sided. The first third of the fight was contested but thereafter it was all Sumbu; his corner pulled Johnson at the end of the twelfth. His victory over Giardello in the QF was almost as impressive and saw him come away marked but also marked the clear superior of the two - and now a slim favourite for the tournament.
    UD15 Frank Klaus
    TKO13 Reggie Johnson
    UD15 Joey Giardello

    THE FIGHT:
In fact, incredibly, it's the first rematch of the tournament I think? The trilogy is completed: who takes bragging rights?

I always thought that although Kalambay won the first fight, it was close. No question he won but it wasn't some one-sided schooling. The rematch was three years later and was another close one. But McCallum probably deserved to edge it. So I think this would always be close and always be points.

The best version of each? I think Kalambay shades it.

This sounds trite, and I don't mean it to be; Kalambay deserves huge credit for taking McCallum's zero, no matter how you slice it. I do think, however, that McCallum showed that he could and would learn and adapt and improve from lessons learned in that fight. He did that very thing, as a matter of fact. I can't help but think this meant that he had to a degree "figured out" Kalambay. At least to the extent he'd take the third match. It's a tough bout, another close one.

Kalambay will always be a tough fight for McCallum but after the 2nd fight, I think McCallum had his number.

A big difference between the two fights was how much Kalambay had slowed by 1991. Still quick and still a good mover, but not really electric on his feet the way he'd been in the first battle. McCallum did fight smarter the second time, with less of a stalking, following performance. I still wouldn't say that he figured Kalambay out or had his number. For one thing, the rematch was a nightmare to score and could have gone either way, but also the part of Kalambay's game that had most troubled McCallum the first time out wasn't quite as strong three years later.

If this is interpreted as McCallum-Kalambay III, though, as a 1991-93 tiebreaker rather than best vs. best, maybe McCallum should be favored, as Kalambay declined very quickly after his loss to the Bodysnatcher.

I'm surprised there haven't been more votes for Kalambay. Depends what version of each fighter we think we're watching, i guess.

So Kalambay has lost theoretically to the man he....well, you know.... beat in real life by quite a margin first time out when they were both prime and arguably beat second time when he was past his best? Only on the internet.

I'm off to watch my Duran dvds, there's one where he sparks Tommy Hearns, it's a zinger.

    This is ridiculous.

How can Kalambay not be the one to go through?
