In my opinion Nigel Benn. Is that some of the reason Toney and Jones werent there? The common view amongst many boxing fans stateside is that Jones, Hopkins and Toney were the best Middleweights of the past 15 to 20 years. If thats so why did they all pass through the most competive of all the weights they fought in so quickly? Or did I just answer my own question?
H2H - RJJ achievement/resume - calzaghe benn done some nice work at 168 and picked up his greatest win there (g-man) but he doesn't have the longevity and quality of calzaghe's reign and i'd back RJJ, toney, calzaghe and kessler to best him.
I would pick Calzaghe over Benn. Benn's power wasn't as devastating at super middle and i could see Calzaghe out boxing him. It would still be a great fight though. Benn has even admitted himself that Calzaghe would probably beat him if the prime versions of both fought each other.
Steve Collins: Eubank twice & Benn twice, wish he had taken on Calzaghe and Jones though. Jones wasnt interested and Collins wasnt interested in Calzaghe.
steve collins could have been another great. I had calzaghe as the best S.middleweight but i think its close to benn.
It has to be Joe Calzaghe because of his longitude, and stay in the division; his achievements there. H2H though, personally, I can see RJJ, Toney, and prime Hopkins beating him. Prime Eubank possibly beats him... he can switch styles so... Gman and Benn with their power would always be in with more then a shot, but I think Joe is perhaps too clever a boxer for Nigel... Collins... I don't know what to say...
hopkins never fought at 168. pre gun-shy eubank has one fight at 168. g-man had one serious fight at 168 and got beaten half to death. collins gets ****ing smashed. no where near skilled enough to bother joe. RJJ beats him, toney at his best is a 50-50 fight and toney being at his best is always a big question mark.
Prime Eubank and Benn would both beat Steve Collins The pre-Watson II Eubank was a wrecking machine - power & ruthlessness with chin to match, whilst Benn was just awesome. The Benn that beat McClellan would slaughter Calzaghe - but those performances are once in a lifetime efforts.
if we're playing that game then the calzaghe that beat lacy tears up the benn that beat the g-man. too focused, too much speed, too many insane combos and too elusive for the brawling benn. benn also doesn't hit any harder at 168 than lacy does. the calzaghe that beat kessler does him with ease as well, stick a regular jab in nige's face and he looks bamboozled. see the malinga fights.
Hopkins fought from Mid to LH, I'm sure he would be more then capable at 168. As I said Gmans power would always cause trouble; Benn was hanging out the ring, that fight threw all the rules out of the window, and should have been stopped as an early win for GMan. His power obviosly carried to 168. Eubank was best at middle, pre Watson, accepted. He still had 16 fights at SM before he faced Joe though in his near cruiser state. I know that lot I mentioned had limited time at 168. That's why I gave Joe the accolade of being the greatest ever super-middle!
Perhaps so.... I would pay attention to the first one and notice that he did find Malinga pretty hard work Benn does hit harder than Lacy I would say, but Calzaghe's head & body movement would see him out of range often enough, backed up by a decent beard. I may have jumped the gun a little and you have raised some good points :deal
both eubank and benn were shot when collins got to them. i'd rank jones, benn, calzaghe and even james toney higher than i would collins.
absolute bull****. benn got back in the ring within the required time limit and survived the rest of the round without going down.
