Back then, really only the UK considered SMW which was a rather new weight class. Theefore the competition wasn't stellar. Today it is an international weight class with competition from around the world. Therefore the fact that Collins, Eubank, Benn etc. was in the top back then is not surprising. Froch, Dodson, Magee of the day.
Ive just watched it again. Benn was back in the ring on 12 or 13, the ref counts to nine. You get 20 secs to get back in the ring after falling, being knocked out. The English commentators didn't know this, and perhaps swayed my judgement that he took longer. I stand by my original point though. G-man has the power to trouble anyone, and so can never be excluded in a H2H, and is always in with shot.
Calzaghe takes it here. RJJ didn't stay there long enough and dominated as long as Calzaghe did, RJJ went to LHW and stayed long enough there.
I thought this thread was called the BEST supermiddleweight of all time, not who stayed there the longest and racked up the most defences v largely mediocre opposition. As I said, the RJJ who beat Toney in 94 would have demolished Calzaghe on any night of Calzaghe's 168 career.
quite right. Eubank as I have said on numerous occasion pre watson two he was an animal and I reckon he would have beat calzaghe at that period.
seems like must people don't know **** about the sport. joe came along shortly after the "golden period" was winding down. the only guys he missed at 168 were beyer and ottke.
How can it be Jones when he did not even unify, fight everyone availiable to him or stay in the Division very long? It is clearly Joe Calzaghe. We will find out who the better fighter is in November.
For you as well then: I thought this thread was called the BEST supermiddleweight of all time, not who stayed there the longest and racked up the most defences v largely mediocre opposition. As I said, the RJJ who beat Toney in 94 would have demolished Calzaghe on any night of Calzaghe's 168 career. We will find out who the better fighter is in November No, we won't. You are a ******.
Thats true, but at Middlweight he got beat of watson in which was a brilliant fight a bit like eubank benn 1. I believe their is no definative who the best at SMW was because eubank admitted he wouldn't go over to the states and fight toney or jones, neither were they willing or stayed in that division long enough to come over to the UK.
To say Jones was the best SMW of all time is a joke in itself. He avoided the division in order to fight in the weak as **** LHW division. One fight with Benn or Eubank would have been worth a decade of LHW dominance.
