Is that because in Dempsey's day street fighting was in it's infant stage ? I know Larry well and while he grew up poor his life was a picnic compared to what Dempsey endured .. Larry told me he wouldn't even fight his brother Jake in a street fight. Let's keep a little perspective.

I'm confused by the thread .. is this styles H2H or street fights, where elements of surprise, use of any object available in question is in play , ect ?

It's well documented Sullivan was an animal and brawled in bars most of his life, usually ending it with a head butt to the face , ect ..

Dempsey is far from alone from fighters who grew up extremely poor or rough but again from what I read his descriptions were about ending them fast and by any means necessary. Who knows what he did or what happened in the world he grew up in when men were killed constantly ?

I guess street fight and H2H fighting styles seem to be two completely different courses of conversation. A Silvia might beat a Tua style for style meeting in the octagon but in a ten second bar fight it is a different matter ..

A few pretty important differences though, like being able to elbow someone in the back of the head when they try to take you down or headbutt someone in the clinch.

or the element of surprise guys ? Every fight I've ever been in or saw did not start with men in opposite corners waiting for a bell to ring .. If a Tua was drinking in a crowded bar and a Silvia bumped him that is a different fight , a street fight ..

What I've seen of Dempsey and what I read he specifically talked about ending it fast by any means necessary and getting out of there ..

If that's the logic, I'll take Johnson with his Battle Royale background. Not to say that Jack wouldn't do well in a brawl.

Do you know the story of an old Larry taking on some MMA guy at his gym? That's a good one.

    Excellent post.

You clearly know a lot more than I do on the subject.

However, I'd like to maybe play devil's advocate and say that a boxer might not be as done for as a clear 1 vs 1 fight in an octagon etc might suggest.

We are after all talking about a street fight. A lot of MMA guys like their striking, and if the two combatants knew nothing of each others backgrounds when they got into the brawl and started the fight punching, things could go to hell for the mixed martial artist very quickly.

No but Larry is certainly still a street guy when he feels like it so it would not surprise me... And we've all seen the Berbick drop kick off the car hood.

A couple that spring to mind:

Jeffries would be a pretty tough mark in a street fight, because he was a very good wrestler as well as a boxer, and also practiced jujitsu.

Jack Johnson was also a good wrestler, and had a background in battle royals.

Vitally Klitschko was a kick boxer as well as a boxer, and his military background would have seen him trained in unarmed combat.

I've heard a few versions but this is generally how the story goes...

    From mma.tv-

Tonight at the gym (Larry Holmes Training Center) undefeated NHB fighter Carmello Morrero was putting on a brutal dirty fighting sparring match with Mark Holmes, Larry Holmes younger brother. Larry jumped into the ring and challenged him on the spot. Carmello objected but after being slapped in the face, squared up with the aging ex-champion. The resulting brawl was shocking. Holmes dropped Carmello with a 1-2 but Carmello jumped up and shot a double leg on Holmes lifting him high to the air and slamming him down thunderously. Holmes, incensed by this turn of event, crotch locked Carmello, amazingly wrestles back to his feet and TAKES HIM DOWN! After landing 5-6 punches Carmello was sleeping.
Holmes afterward said Carmello taking him down ****ed him off the most in that he was a great wrestler in his youth and this is why he was determined to wrestle back to his feet and take the guy down before pounding him out."---From sherdog.com poster.

    Not really.

Does MMA have rules? Street fighting doesn't. Can you eye gouge in an MMA fight, kick someone in the cods, drive your knee into their face when they're down, bite, pick up a broken beer bottle or a tire iron, grab by the hair, throw them out of the cage?

A street fight is going to be won, most often, by the person who is the dirtiest and least worried about doing permanent harm to their opponent, or even kill him.

A mean son of a gun with steel-toe boots, a willingness to grab whatever object is necessary (or pull a knife), gouge the eyes or rub dirt in them, not wait for the fight to formally start and attack from behind -- that's what wins in the street.

If you want to do a comparison of who'd win in a "fair' street fight, there's no such thing.
