A simple question, who in your judgement was the better referee?

Also, who was the best ref over the last 30 years or so? Lane, Steele, Cortez, Padilla, Perez, Christodoulou or maybe someone else?

Lane is better. Steele used to be a good ref until he seemingly started receiving brown envelopes.

I like Lane ,I was a big fan of the ref who commited suicide, can't think of his name at the present.Christodolou is good ,Cortez usually ,though he had an of night in the PBF Hatton affair, imo.Seen Neuman do a good job a few times. My favourite US referee was Arthur Mercante senior.

    Richard Steele by a mile.

First of all because I think he would actually dq a fighter for biting, rather than letting the man continue resulting in his opponent losing part of his ear.

Also he seemed more intrested in being a referee rather than a media star.

That's true, I forgot about Randy. Mercante was before my time so I can't say.

That's the one (well, two) problems I had with Lane. He did seem to act up a bit for the cameras, didn't he?

My other issue with him was he was like a gnat trying to seperate two pitbulls at times, yet when he finally managed to break the fighters up, he'd push them and shove them like a guy who just caught two crooks ransaking his house. :D

    Darn good ref otherwise though...

I thought Lane was better. Arthur Mercante was really good until he got a little too old.

Are you thinking of Richard Green? He commited suicide after the Mancini-Du Koo Kim fight.

But in response to the thread, Mills Lane was the better ref IMO. I have him as the best ref.

Mills Lane wanted to DQ Tyson but I think it was the commisioner told him to take 3 points away instead.

A referee is in total control in the ring, a commissioner is there to make the rules before the fight. Lane was very weak in that fight, and it cost Holyfield part of an ear.

Lane was gonna DQ Tyson but then he talked to someone at ringside and he had to take 3 points away instead and he was all pissed off.

Well he had the power to stop the fight if he was that pissed off, and he choose not too, a mistake I think Steele (or Mercante or Donavon) would not make.

Ok, but a lot of times if you don't follow what someone says, it will comeback to haunt you later. That happens a lot in boxing.
