The better referee: Mills Lane or Richard Steele?

Mills Lane.


Mitch Halpern would have been the best today had he still been around. No question about it.

 

Well Lane's indecisiveness cost Holyfield part of an ear, something that will haunt him.

 

Wasn't Richard Steele a born-again Christian? Nothin' against that per se, but he did seem to be a little too quick to jump in and stop a heated battle, and I always used to wonder if that was why. Along the same line, I didn't know that about Green after the Mancini/Kim tragegy, Bill1234. Interesting. And whoever picked Mercante as the best had it right. He was no nonsense, he stayed outta the fight, and seem to split the difference just right.

 

Richard Steele. Mills Lane was probably corrupt and was involved in too many dodgy calls, especially when it came to the likes of Chavez and Tyson. Dave Paris and Joe Cortez are also excellent.

In recent years, it seems as though Arthur Mercante Jnr., like his father, is a corrupt and incompetant ref.

 

Lane cannot be haunted: ghosts run away. They won't even go into a house where Lane has been reported to have been sighted in.

 

Cortez was involved in way more dodgy calls and has ruined way more fights than Lane. Lane never ruined a fight, he just made a mistake here or there. Joe Cortez has recently ruined all of the fights he has been the ref for.

 

Joe Cortez is firm but you have to admit he is fair.

 

Always liked Steele, but must say that Mills Lane gives me the feeling that he is the real deal.

like when he totally ****ed Bert Cooper out of the heavyweight championship in Atlanta against Evander Holyfield when Holyfield was totally out on his feet

HIS LICENSE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED AFTER JOHNNY OWEN WAS KILLED. I YELLED AT DEKIN TO STOP THE DAMN FIGHT BUT WAS LOOKED AT AND IGNORED LIKE WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TO TELL ME MY JOB. Nah, Tyson took that chomp before Mills or Evander knew what was happening. And he wasn't indecisive -he was about to stop the fight but consulted Holyfield who said "I'm going to knock him out," so he took off 2 points and Tyson who was adamant about saving himself from certain defeat, tried to take another bite, and Mills bounced him.

Mitch Halpern, who committed suicide over a girl, was a student of Richard Steele and had the makings of the next great ref. He did very well in every fight I saw him in -especially Holyfield-Tyson I.

 

Big Dee: Holyfield took shots from Bert and his legs got rubbery and he collapsed against the ropes. Mills rightfully called it a knock down because but for the ropes, Evander would have hit the canvas.

It was legit... although the "Smoke was no joke" that night.

 

Joe Cortez is garbage.

 

He's not fair, he usually favors one fighter and doesn't let them do crap. He also never shuts up and keeps yelling about nothing and makes a huge deal of it. Lane made big deals when he tried breaking the fighters up and got hit or elbowed, like in the rematch with Starling and Breland.

All reffs are in a no win situation.

They can do their best but they will always end up making bad calls.
