I think it will be more of the Calzaghe naysayers that will attempt to discredit Hopkins due to age....as now its the Hopkins naysayers that do it to him.

All the Hopkins fans ever do with age is use it to show his greatness.

Beating him will be Calzaghe's defining moment if it happens....but again, Im not sure it will. I actually am a HUGE fan of Joe's...I love the guy and have for a long time.....I just think the opposite of what others tend to think on this subject, I think he matches up with Bernard terribly.

Im just waiting a few days or so to post why I feel this way as everyone is a little insane over the great win last night. And rightfully so.

Well, one of the main reasons I think Calzaghe handles Hopkins is because of Bernard's age. I thought Hopkins looked quite diminished between his fight with Tarver and his fight with Wright. I think his age has finally caught up with him, and Joe will be too fast even with Bernard employing his usual dirty tactics.
Of course, this isn't a given. Hopkins is a cagey *******, and I remember dismissing him when he fought Tarver and being proven very wrong. But, I feel a lot stronger about a fight with Calzaghe.

And yes, Bernard's age is often cited as proof of his greatness, but when a boxer is in his 40's, all it takes is one loss for him to be labelled as over the hill or washed up.

Hey, maybe I'm overreacting since this board in particular is full of so many fickle *******s who negate any legitimate win with a barrage of criticisms. Hence, I believe a Calzaghe win over Hopkins will be met with similar disdain.

But I really believe the prevaling mindset in the boxing world after a Calzaghe win will be "Good fight for Joe, but ultimately meaningless since Hopkins is so old and past his prime."

Well, I was kinda drunk when I wrote that:D But, imo, Hopkins and then Woods will be Calzaghes fights at 175. I doubt he'll get a fight with Dawson but i'd ****ing love to see it.

The main question is: Who wants to see that fight ??? Two slick spoilers...Lets do Cal vs Woods or Cal vs one of the hungry middleweights like Pavlik or Abraham or even Miranda...yeah THATS WHAT I WANT TO SEE

Hopkins and Calzaghe would be an utter bore. Plus I don't really see it as truly a defining fight. Hopkins is way too old. No matter what happens in the fight if happens it will always be prefaced by "a 43 year old Hopkins." (He'll be 43 in January.)

I also seriously doubt that Hopkins will ever agree to fight in Wales. And Calzaghe will never agree to fight anywhere else so I don't see it happening. There isn't a great groundswell of demand in Hopkins country for the fight. And I think the only reason that Calzaghe fans would want it is because it would give him a marquee notch on his belt. Calzaghe fans don't seem think Hopkins has a chance so I think that sort of works against making it a PPV bonanza in Europe.

If Calzaghe wants to fight someone he should fight Chad Dawson. Now there's a real fight and I think Dawson would probably submit to fighting in Wales because of Calzaghe seniority. Pavlik might be a good fight because I think he's a lot of marquee value and would bring some serious PPV pop.

    good points.

i cannot see hopkins and warren being able to get along to sort out a contract that would suit both.

i think if calzaghe steps up in weight it will be clinton woods.

The one chance for a Hopkins/Calzaghe fight would be if the fight last night did outstanding PPV numbers. If Warren can bring that to the table and combined with Hopkins PPV clout there might be enough money to satisfy the old man. But even then I don't give much of a shot.

Any word on the PPV numbers? Nice crowd they had there in Wales but let's face it, PPV is where the real money is at.

I agree totally. I felt Hopkins looked like crap against Winky. (and Winky looked even worse)
My prediction of a Calzaghe win is based almost entirely on Bernard's age. I'd favour Hopkins in a prime vs prime matchup, but not now.

I don't really want to see this fight happen. The only way Hopkins will be competitive is by fighting very dirty, and who wants to see that?

it was shown on a small £10 a month irish sports tv station called setanta, rival to the big player in the uk sky sports and was not on a ppv .

it was shown to try and increase its base membership figures and to try and take some of sky`s marketshare from it.

so basically setanta bought the fight as a loss leader to boost its profile and figures would have been tiny.

they have a total pay subscription in the uk of 200,000 plus a freeview channel option another 300,000 plus they are ireland sport channel .

then you have to factor in the fight was at 2 am in the morning and the numbers watching would be tiny .
