He should have went for to Cruiserweight after heavyweight to ease himself into the weight loss. It would have been quite easy for Jones to clean up that division at the time, but his arrogance got the better of him and he went back to LHW.
He shouldn't have gone down in weight that quickly, which accelerated his decline. You could see some slippage in the Woods fight -- he got tagged more than usual -- and then when you add the weight loss on top of it, it made him a shell of himself. And by the way, he looks awful in the first Tarver fight as well. It wasn't any punch that took his legs, just age and hardship on his body. I wish he'd have retired after Ruiz, but if he'd stayed at HW and chosen his matches carefully, who knows what he could have accomplished there?
There's no way to know for sure why he declined. Was it the weight gain/loss or did he naturally lose some of his immense skills during that time period? There's no way to know for sure but i would say it's a combination of both. Even RJJ doesn't know the answer.
Caught with a flush counter which was thrown while Tarver had his eyes closed. In other words, it makes him unlucky. Tarver is was and it seems will always be ridiculously overrated.
No doubt it hurt him, but IMO being able to win a belt at HW adds to his legacy, even if it was John Ruiz he took it from. Not many guys form the middleweights are able to do that
When Roy beat Ruiz, he should have stayed at Heavyweight if he wanted to fight on, he would have earned more for starters IMO. However i think the move up to heavyweight was a calculated one, he knew with Ruiz's style and not being a overly big hitter he could survive and outbox Ruiz for 12 Rounds like he did so easily. Once Ruiz was out of the way some of the bigger, heavier handed Heavyweights looked to bigger task (literally) so he moved back down. I believe Jones could have stayed at Heavyweight and picked the right fights to have had a few more wins as a Heavyweight Champ then cashed out and retired for good going down as a ATG.
After the first Tarver fight, it should have been obvious for Roy that he needed to retire. He won the fight, but he looked like a shadow of his former self and should have just retired. ****, imagine how people would rate him now if he left after that first Tarver fight, pretty much undefeated (DQ doesn't matter)..
I see two options for Roy One, he should have retired after the Tarver fight, when he was undefeated, people wanted to see the rematch but its not like they would cry about it if it hadnt happened. Two, he should have sticked around at heavyweight and posibly establish his legacy there if he carefully picked his chellengers. Even if he lost at least he would have an excuse that he was too small and then any other loses at LHW wouldnt matter because people would say that Lennox Lewis ruined him. Instead it was Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson.
Going to HW wasn't his biggest mistake...if anything it made him immortal. I remember people going nuts about him being the best athlete of the 90s because he went up in HW and won against a top guy when he was an underdog. Honestly his mistake was going back down to LHW and not sticking around at HW to pick on some of the lower level guys there and build his rep up as a HW.
