When a fighter takes a significantly smaller purse than his opponent because he knows he's going to beat the brakes off his opponent. That's when you know a fighter means business.

When Pacquiao fought Marco Antonio Barrera he was an unknown to most of the boxing world. Most boxing fans had no idea who he even was. Jim Lampley said Pacquiao received a purse of 300k which was significantly less than Barrera. The risk was high and the reward low, but what that fight did was establish Pacquiao as an ATG and a known commodity to boxing fans.

Usyk took home about 5 times less than Anthony Joshua despite being the more accomplished and better fighter. I believe Usyk only received 30% of the purse in the first Fury fight. The reason why Usyk could get these guys into the ring is because he was willing to take less money. And then he beat them down.

That's the mark of a truly confident fighter. I'll take less money to beat your ass and make a name for myself.

It's why Golovkin could never get Canelo into the ring when Golovkin was in his prime. The risk/reward didn't make sense for Canelo. If GGG had said, you know what, you can take 5 or 6 times the money I receive. Just get into the ring and I'll beat you senseless.

I'd say it depends on the fighter

GGG was a terrific fighter, but these boards and many others overrate his abilities. He struggled mightily against Jacobs (HBO had GGG Losing) and clearly beat Canelo but it was still 8-4 or even 7-5...not overly impressive. I had the rematch a draw. Again, not overly impressive. GGG arguably lost to Dervenchenko too...not overly impressive.

H2H GGG a problem for anyone, but historically he was not very hungry. He offered a CW to Rosado of 158 which Rosado turned down then refused young Canelo at 155. Called out Ward at 168 but demanded 164 while permitting JCC Jr and Froch at 168.

I think GGG wouldve won all those fights too.

    8-4 isn’t impressive over Clenelo? That’s a joke.

So what if HBO had GGG losing to Jacobs? That’s one scorecard out of thousands of opinions.

feel like the fighters that don't take it too seriously seem to be the ones that do well e.g usyk, GGG, canelo

Fighting the best opponents possible consistently.

Carl Froch is a great example of a fighter who was truly confident.

The one who took a risk in the Barrera VS Pacquiao fight was Barrera not Pac. Manny had nothing to lose and everything to gain unlike Barrera who was third in the pound for pound list and was a boxing star risking his status against an unknown but very dangerous young lion who he was expected to beat. This was not Barrera facing Hamed, Morales or Marquez who were big stars like him. As it was Pac was catapulted by the victory while Barrera s reputation took a huge hit.

Fighters who don't duck don't play weight games with rehydration clauses, catch weights etc. Not afraid to fight outside of their home country, don't complain about the officials selected or what gloves the opponent uses.

HBO was the broadcast platform. They were GGG hype men and they came to terms that GGG was maybe not the world beater they were building.

Beating Clenelo 8-4 and never hurting him once is a fine win, but GGG was supposed to be a bulldozer. Where was bulldozing?? Seemed suspect.

CLENelo aged GGG out by at least a year or two and GGG still beat him at least once at a minimum but okay

Jacobs aged GGG out by several years, that fight could have been done around 2013/2014

I still dont know why GGG didnt just accept Canelo's catchweight. He wouldve won anyway. But he waited a year (over weight) which took part of his prime. GGG still wouldve won...poor management on Abel Sanchez and Sampson L imho.

Canelo didnt lose by a margin in 1st fight...8-4 and maybe 7-5. Definitely close enough for a rematch. 2nd fight was a well-earned draw by both men.
