how would these guys fare today? guys like williams. lytel ,burley, satterfield and the rest of them? is any of them champion?
There would be many belt-holders at many weights amongst their number. Depending on circumstances, a guy like Burley or Williams would be p4p #1.
Well you always can fancy Satterfield to ko someone or be koed by a top quality opponent, so he might get a title. Bert Lytell and Charley Burley you could probably take to the bank to bag a title. And Williams, well you look at the boxing masterclass Hopkins put on against Pavlik, now to me Hopkins is better than Williams, and that fight also wasnt at 160, but its nitpicking to me all that. Williams is a decent bet, who knows.
160-175 isnt very strong really. I would imagine most of those guys would at least hold a title...and I reckon they would be dominating whatever divisions they chose to compete at.
They'd all be on top of boxing. Burley would be WW champ, which he'd exchange a few times with Holman Williams but win the series. Charles would be a 3 weight dominant champ from 160-175 and maybe goto Cruser-HW for belts. Moore would pick up Charles left overs but Hopkins may get a win over Moore. Bivins/Marshall would be temporary champions and would have losses to murderers row fighters and BHOPs/Dawson may beat them. The only threat to them would be Mosley at 147, but Mosley loses, 160-168 there are no major threats to them, and Hopkins/Dawson at 175 but Hopkins is too old to beat prime Murderers Row fighters and Dawson we don't know yet.
Burley would probably turn pro at 140, though I don't know how long he could hold it. Domination at 147 would follow. 154 would be his best division and would be the one he would find himslef annointed as p4p #1. 160 would be where he would really start to attract admiration. If the right fights could be made at 168, he would visit it.
Who are we considering the murderers row here though? I thought it consisted of these guys Charley Burley Eddie Booker Bert Lytell Jack Chase Holman Williams Lloyd Marshall Maybe that includes Bivins and Wade. But I didnt think Charles and Moore were lumped in with them..as really they had a lot of success and opportunity compared to those blokes.
Yeah well Moore gets included due to him not getting the chance for so long, he ended up getting his title shot, but for years he was in the boat of the others.
Eddie Booker...i mean there's no footage, but i'd happily put all i got on him shutting out undisputed world champion Kelly Pavlik something like 12-0.
Charles had to beat them all to get those opportunities and Moore had to have to keep winning for 2decades to get those opportunities
These were the members of the "Black Murderers' Row" as devised by Budd Schulberg (who wrote "On the Waterfront": Charley Burley Eddie Booker Aaron Wade Bert Lytell Lloyd Marshall Jack Chase
I think both are murder to fight...Calzaghe stylistically, and Burley, because he'd knock the hell out of you.
Both presented unorthodox stylistic dilemmas, however, Burley had serious power that Calzaghe just didn't have. Calzaghe can be solved ...but Burley was not only complicated, he was very dangerous. It's tougher to solve a complicated style when you have to be so wary. Burley was one of those ring rarities who could put his whole body into his shots -maximum propulsion and leverage without losing balance. That is serious stuff.
