The Bones Jones hype-train is spinning out of control today...

MMA fans rate potential over experience everytime.

 

I agree he's largely untested vs a really dangerous striker or submission fighter BUT I do think his performances justify a good deal of hype.

In an era where fans all too often delude themselves based on records and dodgy stats while ignoring questionable performances its nice to see someone stamp there mark so well.

Who else has burst into the scene in such impressive fashion in recent years? reminds me of the good old days of fighters like Fedor and Shogun appearing from nowhere and decimating there opposition.

 

Thank God some common sense still exists

 

Jon Jones is 23, has been training MMA just a few years, and is 7-0 in the UFC (yes, I am giving him the win versus Hamill). He's manhandled his opponents with pure athleticism. I think there's cause for the hype. In fact, I wouldn't even call it hype. He's deserved the praise.

While Shogun certainly looked impressive versus Machida, let's remember that he also got overpowered by Forest Griffin and looked like **** against Mark Coleman. With Bones size and athleticism, he could easily ragdoll Shogun.

I see this fight going one of two ways:

Shogun surprises Bones with an overhand right early. Good night.

Bones dominates Shogun like no one else.

 

so shoguns only hope is a Hail Mary punch?

Otherwise he gets dominated?

both the Jones and Silva hype-trains are a little out of control today but I guess it's normal after two solid performances yesterday.

It's not like they are not both amazing fighters.

 

I guess I missed the silva hype train.

I thought he just beat a dangerous opponent and got a little credit for it.

Not really hype man.

 

I'd hardly call an overhand right a Hail Mary punch considering Shogun has landed it numerous times in his career (most recently against Machida). But he's not going to chop Bones down with other striking because A) He will be at a huge reach disadvantage and B) Jones will take it to the ground if the striking fails to go his way.

And if this gets to the ground, Jones' huge size and athletic advantage will allow him to reign down some heavy blows, which I believe will effectively take Shogun out of the fight at that point.

So yeah, I think there's one way Shogun wins and it's via knockout from a right hand. Will he decision Bones? No. Will he take him down and win a ground fight? No. Will he head kick him? No. Will he catch him in a sub off his back? Probably not.

 

so what you saying is that Shogun has to load up on a big punch and hope for a ko?

Thats the very definition of a Hail Mary punch.

 

I think the distinction that Tko4 is making is that Shogun's patented overhand right would be a calculated and intentional attack, whereas a "hail mary" is typically thought of as a wild desperation move on the fly that lands out of pure luck more than anything else.

Semantics.

Reducing the chances of someone like Shogun to one maneuver is a bit silly. As Popkins has been saying, Jones has looked incredible so far, yes. He still hasn't faced anyone like Shogun though.

 

Shogun can of course wear Jones down with knees to the midsection and thighs, male him less reluctant to shoot by being a very dangerous striker, and control him in the clinch due to his extensive Muay Thai knowledge. It's not like Jones is just gonna' have his own way. I expect he'll take Ahogun down and rain down some heavy elbows at some point, Shoguns knees no doubt make it harder for him to keep his balance when sprawling nowadays, but Shogun is massively talented on the floor.

So is Jones, but just because he's gone through some damn good fighters, doesn't mean he'll go through damn great fighters the same way.

Is it a hard, close-to-call fight? Damn straight, the short amount of time between announcement and fight night makes it a very intriguing event indeed. But Jones' unorthodox approach, youth and athleticism mean he cannot be counted out. Shoguns experience, intensity and proven ability at the highest level mean, despite a series of bad injuries and having had some tough battles, he cannot be anything other than favourite.

Jones should watch the Diabate fight to see how a tall, lanky opponet can cause Shogun some trouble standing up. I think it's doubtful Shogun gets Bones down either, so to be honest I am struggling to see which approach he would take. He is a more dangerous operator IMO though, and more than competent if Jones gets him down.

It may then be a case of 'what does Jones do?'

 

Jones will control where this fight takes place.

 

Exactly Don't get me wrong i'm excited to see this fight. Rua-Jones should be an awesome fight but shogun is on another level.

 

I just vomitted. This Jones hype is ******ed. Wasn't belfort only 19 and seemed unstoppable? Wasn't machida hyped as the future? people saying Shogun only stands a lucky punch chance of winning? This is unreal, I'm gonna have to leave here for a few weeks until people can full dismount off of Jon Jones dick. Earth calling ESB, Earth calling ESB!!!

It is to say shogun cant win the fight any other way then to get lucky early.

thats what a Hail Mary punch is by definition no matter how much skill you have at throwing it.
