The Bones Jones hype-train is spinning out of control today...

You do realize that eventually, one of the fighters touted as "the future" of a division has to be? Champions don't reign forever.

No, i have been a big Jones fan since his Bonnar fight. I happy to see him succeed. I like following fighters careers from the beginning. I think most fight fans do.

And what do you mean fans like me? I am probably one of the most levelheaded fight fans you will ever talk to. I know that sounds douchey, by the way.

 

Anyone remember how a once dominant wrestler who once got ahold of you would take you down with spectacular slams faired against Shoguns Mauy Thai clinch? Not saying Rampage was a collegiate wrestler of dominance but he would destroy people with takedowns once he grabbed them (Just like Bones), anyone remember what his defense was for the MT clinch? How do we know Bones doesn't have the same defense? Has he stopped any top MT strikers from getting the clinch? Does anybody really think Shogun is stupid and will stay at Bones' reach and NOT take it to him in the clinch?

 

Against Rampage, Shogun had a reach advantage. He will be giving up 8 1/2 inches against Jones. Plus, Jones' takedowns are much more unorthodox (for lack of a better word) than Rampages. I don't think Shogun will want to be in the clinch, since that seems to be where Jones does his best work. Jones would appear to be an outside fighter due to his physical build, but most of his offensive success takes place on the inside.

 

Bones jones is pretty damn good! Hes no hype job.

 

Who has put him in the clinch though? Can he handle knees? Its a whole lot different throwing someone when they try to bodylock you then when someone uses the plum on you. Shogun is a master at it, but then again a godlike being such as Bones would have no problem breaking Shoguns arms off and beating him in the head with them will he?

 

So was Machida and Miguel Torres a few short months ago. If Jones beats Shogun then I'l start to buy into it until then I am sticking with a know quantity.

Nobody has put Jones in the clinch yet, but probably because that's where his best throws come from. Yes, Shoguns clinch is a lot better than anyone he has faced so far, and yes, his knees could make a big difference. However, Jones' reach can really be the difference in scenarios like this. We'll see what happens.

 

I know what you are getting at but you are overstepping the mark. Machida is not a hypejob at all.

Neither is Torres.

 

What does Quinton Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Ricardo Arona, Alistair Overeem, Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell and Lyoto Machida have in common besides all at one point being a champion or considered in the elite of their divisions? They've all succumbed to Rua. I'm a big fan of Jones, extremely exiting fighter and will only getting better over the years but it is way to early to put him in the same catagory as Shogun or Anderson. Bones has beaten some tough guys and beaten them well but he has NEVER fought 1 guy who could be considered top 5 in the division. Jones will probably go onto greatness, he may even beat Rua, but at this moment in time his acclompishments seems insignificant compared to Silva and Ruas.

If you look at how quickly Jones went for the takedown vs Vera I agree it seems likely he'll do the same agenst Shogun.

Beyond not having been in a bad situation one big mental test I don't think Jones has faced yet is remaining aggresive in the face of offence. Obviously he'll likely be more warey but the tendancey for some new fighters is sometimes not to get too aggresive but rather to get too defencive. I don't think that would be a good thing for Jones, thus far offence has been his best defence afterall.

 

Reach played zero part in that result, Shogun got in Rampages face early, caught him with some dirty boxing and then didnt let up until he was TKOed.

 

I'm just saying that it's easier to get into someones face when you have a reach advantage, and it's easier to do clinch work when you have a reach advantage.
