Most people agree that boxing is corrupt and always has been -- fixed fights, dives, bribed judges, etc. Yet aside from really extreme examples, nobody points to specific fights as fixed. If you go through each fight individually and ask a boxing fan whether it's fixed, they'll say no. Peculiar.
Well Alis phantom punch on Liston. Ali returned to his corner with his face facing the cameras and said "he laid down" This was not on audio. You could not hear in TV land what Ali said but in terms of a professional lip reader, acceptable in courts of law, he said it.
Didn't Jake Lamotta claim (as opposed 2 admitted) that he threw 1 of his fights ? And d fix is often in d judges' /& referee's bias like in so many robberies and wrong stoppages that i m sure many will b able 2 give many examples 2 . Also , it is a consensus that Walker Smith Jr. carried Henry Armstrong 4 another example . And actually most of boxing fans don't consider d obvious cases of carrying (like in many Valuev fights) as such . Some will mention Ali vs Liston #2 . And i read that Archie Wright and his contemporaries and predecessors had a habit of taking it easy in a fight just 2 increase d interest in its rematch which of course happened 2b a title fight (and hence also securing that their title fights will b against easy opponents that they could afford 2 take it easy on in 1st place) . Also , many times d fix is in d ranking / picking of opponents , c Lee Q Murray's ranking in Louis' era as opposed 2 Tony Galento and other circus acts 4 example . Also note many of Roid Jones' title defenses and ask yourself , how did his opponents were granted their ranking , of course I don't mean all of his opponents . There r many more examples of this type . Did I give enough examples ? I believe that there r posters here who will b able 2 mention d fixes of d type that u meant .
Jake LaMotta lost to Billy Fox to gain a title shot, and he had to pay 100,0000$ as well. Ali vs Liston II is always controversial but, I still think the punch was legit but, Liston chose to stay down. I read somewhere that Joe Louis' people wanted to fix a fight with Baski saying that the fight would go the distance and their would be no knockouts but, a nice purse for both fighters. Basilio thought he was jobbed in one of the Gavilan fights as well. Not sure if there is any truth in it as it was from a relative of Baski's.
Well you could connect it to the loc ness monster if you put in the time and effort. He was referring to Listons dive what else??
From early on in this video goes into great detail. 4:40 onwards. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oeo2Z57fRRw&feature=feedf[/ame] Very good video.
Promoters pick their own judges, cross trainer. This allows for some fixing on decisions. When a very talented golden goose type is about to be upset by a washed up name, journeyman, or unknown, there are too many instances where a bad decision is rendered. If boxing wants to clean up its act, they allow for instant replay, and pick the judges via lottery system 24 hours before the fight. I think it is hard to fix a high level fight where both parties stand to make a fortune in their next fight if they win, but I do believe there are some dives taken on the way up. One high profile fight that I beleive was fixed was Tyson vs. Etienne.
Hearns won it clearly. However if it was 15 rounds Leonard would've stopped him again. If you look at the last couple of rounds, Ray was getting him. After Leonard realised Tommy wasn't the same puncher up close, that he was from a distance. He never looked at him the same.
Now that's interesting. It's more compelling than (and may be an addendum to?) Ali standing over Liston yelling "Get up you yellow dog!"
Dundee in his book 'In the Corner' - was emphatic that Ali hit Liston with a fast hard punch and Ali stood over his saying something like "get up you chump, this is too easy for people to believe" or something to that effect.....
