One of the main problems with Boxing at the minute, is promoters protecting there boxers, not putting them in the ring with risky opponent. Spoon feeding them opposition. Another is so many big fights are not being made. The problem is Boxing Fans. I just read a thread that said Jacobs, Dawson and Williams have all been exposed as Hype Jobs. I'd love to ask Why. Daniel Jacobs fights Pirog. 2 up and coming fighters, who ever loses is labled exposed, who ever wins is labled Champ. Williams - Has wins over Quintana, Margorita, Martinez and Wright. Loses one fight to the now Pound for Poung number 3. And he's a hype job. Dawson - Wins over a string of champions. Loses to Pascal in a close fight - Again Hype job. No wonder boxers are so afraid to have risky fights, cos if they lose they get thrown out instead of helped up. I like watching Victor Ortiz. But since he lost against Maidana people don't care. But watch that fight again, he went toe to toe with Maidana, and the hot that ended it for him on the ropes. Would have sparked out any fighter. Boxing fans change your attitude. Accept like other sports and in the older boxing days. Fighters that take chances lose. Lets reward the fighters that take those chances, win, lose or draw.
People throw the 'hype job' word around way too much, it's getting ridiculous. I think too many have set the standard of 'boxers who deserve the hype' to the insanely high level of expecting them to be virtually unstoppable. Even if they have a rough night they may be unfairly labelled as 'exposed'. More and more people come to expect perfect zero loss records. It does nothing to encourage the tougher fights when these displays of rashness unfairly damages a fighters credibility.
exactly - its all about marketing fighters on being undefeated, or having high KO percentages. Soon as a fighter has a Loss, they lose so much appeal.
Fighters back then could have 5,6, even up to 10 losses and upset an undefeated fighter. Too many people getting caught up with the hype where a "0" in your record makes you a great fighter. Those same people need to look up fighters like Tony Zale, Jose Luis Castillo, and Glenn Johnson.
I respect fighters who have osses but take on all chalengers. There are still a few around these days that i honestly believe aren't scared to lose: Pac, Marquez, Cotto. These guys will fight anyone they are told to. But still nothing like the older days. I imagine Robinson would just fight any fighter avaiable.
