Promoters doing the same thing as usual - wait until fighters are old/past best (scamming the public from seeing prime vs prime fights) then cashing in (Tyson Lewis an example). We’ve got Spence-Crawford scheduled and AJ-Wilder possible for December. These fights should have had happened years ago, all four are passed best.
One of the reasons I respect Mike Tyson is because he beat Don King. Mike is extreme, and I understand that, and he is no angel. But is a better person than Don King anyway. And he set an example for the other boxers, but the other boxers did not follow him. Now what do boxing fans think? Is it better for boxing to be headlined by boxers, or ex-boxers, or managers, some of whom have served prison terms for murder (like Don King)?
This makes no sense. How could the promoter possibly benefit from making less money today than he would have made yesterday? Usually the conspiracy allegation is that one fighter aged another fighter. But that’s not really the case in Crawford/Spence or Wilder/Joshua. I agree completely that both fights are several years late tho.
I think it's the usual marinating strategy, i think more money would come in from proper fans yesterday than today, but amongst casuals where the vast majority of money comes from, having these extra years to get the Crawford and Spence names out there will probably pay dividends in getting more PPV buys. Also think for casuals that hear this fight should have happened years ago, it creates a kind of "wow it's finally happening after all these years?!" element than can convince them to buy it I understand why the promoters do it, but it's so disrespectful to genuine fans of the sport that pays their bills Edit: by their bills, I mean the promoters bills
Spence and Crawford are both still at the top of their game, are they peaking? Nah, but they're still in their prime.
It's because Haymon is involved in both of these fights and he doesn't make money from boxing in the traditional way. PBC was funded by a huge hedge fund, people invest in the fund which he uses to pay boxers purses which he gets a percentage off, hence why he pays his boxers so well, it means he makes more money if he over pays fighters. Even if the card fails to make back the money paid to the fighters on the card it doesn't matter because the hedge fund is where his income really comes from and so ensuring he has a stable of champions fighting is more important as he can garner more investment in the fund. At least that's how his business seemed to be set up, the fund may have run out of money a while ago and then he needed networks like Showtime and Fox to finance PBC. Reality is Spence/Crawford was never that big a money earner so making it sooner didn't make sense and while AJ/Wilder would indeed of made him a lot of money it would of also seen him lose his one heavyweight champion which was a major component in PCS's stable, could PBC secure future network deals and pay his fighters as much as they do without network backing?
The violent ****** Mike Tyson? He most certainly did not get the win over Don King. King laughed his corrupt self all of the way to the bank courtesy of the violent ****** Mike Tyson.
We'd all have liked to seen these fights before now, but none of the fighters are over the hill, Bud and Deontay are getting on for sure but not far off their primes
