Well using Boxrec's less than desirable seeding format has not been a total failure as there are some intersting match-ups...Maybe now that some of the lesser known fighters have been eliminated a little more selecting and discussing might take place! Anyway here is the sweet 16...Thread open untill Thursday march 25 11:59 EST:

I cant believe that Patterson is on the verge of upsetting Jeffries. That fight is a total mismatch!

Patterson would have more speed, more skill, more workrate and more power than anyone Jeffries faced

I am as surprised as you are! I figured that although Patterson has the lower seed this would prove to be a bad match-up for him...maybe Jeffries can now be included in the most underrated discussions in the future! I like Floyd alot, but am not sure that he could pull this out

We know one thing. Patterson has never been the full 15 rounds and won!. He could probably go the distance but who knows. Jeffries goes 15 rounds in his sleep.

We also know that Patterson faced some big hitters in his time, that are comparable in hitting power to Jeffries. Liston knocked him out twice in a round. Johansen also knocked him out, although Patterson was able to turn the tables on hims twice. Interesting to note though that Ingemar didnt really have the best chin though.

Perhaps Pattersons best argument is his performances against Bonavena. He did manage to sneak that one on points. 5 rounds to 4 and 6 rounds to 4 on the two cards that were anywhere close to the mark. Even if he were to handle Jeffries as well as he handled oscar, I dont think i would like to take a round or two lead into the last 5 rounds against the fighter with the greatest stamina in the world, Would you?

Patterson does look very good on film. But, you have to question his performance against World Class fighters. He was obliterated against Liston twice. He was obliterated once against Ingemar Johansen. He was stopped twice by Muhammed Ali. He was beaten and drawn with once by Jerry Quarry but he was knocked down by Quarry in both fights! He was quite well beaten by Jimmy Ellis. Though he was pre prime and lighter, he lost to the Supermiddleweight Joey Maxim (didnt exactly handle him as well as Jeffries handled Supermiddleweight all time great Bob Fitzsimmons).

Patersons best win was against light heavyweight great Archie Moore which was a great effort, but note that this was just one month after he squeaked a Split Decision againt Tommy Jackson. He had a decent win against Machen, but Machen is no Jeffries and his record after paterson was 3 wins from 10. Hard to really count that. I discussed Bonavena already. All in all, patterson must not look a good bet against an all time great in Jeffries. If you pick him, you must have a lot of faith in the Bonavena wins and the Johnansen wins.

Looking at Jeffries, it is actually not correct to say he never fought someone as quick as Patterson. Corbett may very well be the quickest fighter of all time. He was KOd! Fitz was probably as quick or close to as quick (and hit a lot harder) as Patterson also. He was also KOd. It is hard to judge work rate, because of lack of film. I would have thought that bob Armstrong was pretty quick and had a good workrate. Maybe as close to Patterson as Jeffries fought. Jeffries beat him quite easily.

All in all, i just cant see the argument for patterson in this one. Perhaps some patterson fans can make their points?

And by the way, while it is likely that Patterson is faster than Jeffries, Jeffries himself was very, very fast and there are actually no guarantees that Paterson will be the faster fighter.
